From the catwalks of Milan to your jewelry box, find out the top trends from Milan Fashion Week.
According to the uber-sleek Italians, next fall it’s back to basics – army style. Milan Fashion Week has been not only a haven for the ultra-thin and ultra-stylish, this year it was also a boot camp for military missionaries.
Buckles, brocade and chunky gold studs were marching down the catwalk, but if you’re more a free spirit type and less a saluting sergeant then breath an unregimented sigh of relief Gucci is coming to your rescue. Tapestry bags, frills and tassels floated down il-catwalk, along with studded suede ankle
boots, leather belts and Cossack style over-the-knee leather riding boots.
One of Italy’s favorite designing sons, Roberto Cavalli was as heavy on the glitz and glam as one would expect, albeit with a slightly softer edge than he usually chooses.
A strong floral theme ran through the whole collection, with embroidered flowers sprouting up on frothy summer dresses, black evening corsets, heavy Afghan coats and even a long black riding jacket.
But, as with London and New York it’s also the season of disco and big hair as the seventies/eighties clamour for their style recognition. Chunky accessories (think perspex bracelets), Mr T. medallions and Madonna style lace mixed with ankle boots will be dragging us back to a time when the ‘back-combed’ hair look was a choice, rather than a time-constraint issue.
