The new Obama White House is determined to bring music to the masses, and what better way than to celebrate the uniquely American genre – jazz.

Kicking off the new “White House Music Series”, First Lady Michelle Obama opened the proceedings Monday afternoon with a jazz session featuring a series of classes for about 150 young musicians taught by luminaries like Wynton Marsalis and Paquito D’Rivera.

“Today’s event exemplifies what I think the White House, the People’s House, should be about,” Obama explained.

“This is a place to honor America’s past, celebrate its present and create its future. And that’s why all of you all are here today. It’s about you, the future. And what better example of this is — than jazz, America’s indigenous art form.”

Mrs. O wore a white pencil skirt, pink blouse, silver Jimmy Choos and a stunning Erickson Beamon
floral brooch from their Victory Garden Collection. You may remember this particular brooch from the final presidential debate last fall (which seems like a lifetime ago).
