The broken (or split) heart jewelry design – which hit its height of popularity in the 1970s – is used to symbolize bonds of friendship, love and family between two people. Many service members purchase the style to remind them of their significant other left waiting at home, and BFFs have been known to wear the two halves to show the world their special bond.
