Gawk at our ‘Best and Worst Dressed’ jewelry stars at the 2009 Emmy Awards. Who were the hottest diamond divas and who could have used a do-over?

The 2009 Emmy awards brought out some daring fashion moves, lots of safe bets and a few big misses. The biggest winner of the night, though, had to be Emmy host, Neil Patrick Harris, who romanced the audience with his classic opening number, quick wit and 007-esque white dinner jacket. Way to go Doogie! Our overall red carpet winners included a stunning Drew Barrymore in a blush Monique Luhlliergown and pearl jewelry by Anna Hu, Mad Men‘s January Jones in sculptural Versace and Neil Lane diamond jewels, and ‘wow-worthy’ Blake Lively in scarlet red Versace and 22 carat Lorraine Schwartz diamond studs. Stunning. Red carpet jewelry trends came in the guise of:

Traditional diamond glamour on stars like Vanessa Williams in huge diamond drop earrings, Samantha Harris in a vintage choker and Julia Louis Dreyfuss in Neil Lane diamond chandeliers.

Flashes of color on Padma Lakshmi in a purple halter by Badgley Mischka and ruby chandeliers, Joely Fisher in diamonds and amethysts and Mariska Hargitay in Carolina Herrera and a diamond and ruby statement necklace by Fred Leighton.

Yellow gold on Debra Messing in red Michael Kors, Kate Walsh in silver Marchesa and Hayden Panetierre in J. Mendel and Fred Leighton jewels.

And black diamonds on a very pregnant Heidi Klum in 90 carats(!) of Lorraine Schwartz jewels, Alicia Witt dripping in Martin Katz, and Tina Fey in simple drop earrings from Fred Leighton.

The ‘take it down a notch’ police had their work cut out for them, with celebs like Sarah McLachlan and Nancy O’Dell. And we think Sarah Silverman, whose moustached gag during the show was a hoot, needs a do-over in the dress department. Sorry, Sarah.
