 FashionWK_S15_blog_20140912_a

New York Fashion Week has come to a bittersweet end, but for us jewelry mavens we’re in for another three weeks of a high octane hayride of bling, ball gowns and game-changing glamor. Top designers included newcomers like Rosie Assoulin and Delpozo sharing the spotlight with mainstays like Michael Kors and Oscar de la Renta. Athletic wear went opulent while punchy prints took to new level, and wide-leg trousers worked the catwalk.  Meanwhile, for us jewelry hounds with designers like Reem Acra and Tory Burch lending a new look to sequined sophistication, statement sparklers were sparse but when present, explosive. Let’s take a look at the bountiful amount of bling coating the runways with the top five trends to watch out for in S/S 2015….

Dior – Dior’s latest high jewelry collection, ArchiDior, featured 44 new pieces designed by Victoire de Castellane. Castellane commented that she wanted to create each piece with an architect’s eye, just like Christian Dior designed his dresses. A number of Castellane’s jewelry designs took up to 2,500 hours of work – talk about dedication!

Chanel – Chanel’s high-end jewelry collection presented during this year’s Fall 2014 Couture Show was inspired by the Café Society of the 1920’s. Pieces included braceletsrings, tiaras, and brooches, and Coco Chanel’s favorite flower the camellia made a special appearance in several designs. What a lovely homage to such an iconic brand! Bulgari – Bulgari took a different route during this year’s Fall 2014 Couture runway show. The brand showcased their famous colored jewelry pieces on their models as they sashayed down the runway. Bulgari’s CEO Jean-Christophe Babin commented that diamond jewelry now makes up around 40% of the new collection, as compared to Bulgari’s usual colored stones. Whether diamonds or gemstones, we’re fans of all Bulgari jewelry designs!

The Swarovski juggernaut is no ‘fortune’s fool’. They’re getting into the movie biz with Shakespeare’s classic, Romeo and Juliet, no less. And who better to adapt The Bard’s text to the big screen than Academy Award-winner Julian Fellowes, the witty Brit behind the Downton Abbey phenomenon.
I smell Oscar….
No stranger to collaborative screen projects, Swarovski’s heritage includes several decades of costume and set design across ballet, theatre, opera and film, according to their website.
What this is, says Nadja Swarovski, is “a way of deepening involvement with established visionaries, but also supporting today’s emerging talent. The young stars have a chemistry that translates beautifully onto the big screen and will captivate audiences around the world.”
While it will be hard to beat the Claire Danes/Leonard DiCaprio Romeo and Juliet in my book, Swarovski is sweetening the deal by launching a (wait for it….) Romeo and Juliet jewelry line to complement the film.
Gold-plated Swarovski Crystal
Ring from Romeo and Juliet – $100
The collection includes a knot ring like the one Romeo gives Juliet in the movie, heart and star pendants, earrings shaped like daggers and rose gold bangles. Poison bottles and pantaloon pendants apparently didn’t make the cut.
Gold-plated Swarovski Crystal Heart Pendant from Romeo and Juliet
Prices are all under $200 – perfect for English Lit majors and theater geeks with a bling fetish (myself included). The film will be released in the US on October 11th, and the jewelry will be available nationwide on September 30th.
Pendant with Magenta and White Swarovski Crystal on Jewelry.com  – $26.40
In the meantime, what light through yonder window breaks? It’s Jewelry.com’s own Swarovski Collection, with over 20 new styles just added. Enter code 40SWAROV for an Extra 40% Off, jewelry hounds. Which Swarov style is your favorite (I have a penchant for our little green frog pendant)? Would you wear Romeo and Juliet bling? Weigh in!

New York Fashion Week: Jewelry Trends, Spring 2014

The fashion trends from Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week’s Spring RTW shows so far have run the gamut from 90s-era slouchy jumpsuits to Bride-of-Frankenstein chic. Of course, we have flirty florals and swingy spring things to gawk at too. Here is a quick roundup of the jewelry trends I’ve spotted so far:

Urban Tribalism:

Donna Karan gave us animal prints, denim and wooden token statement necklaces that can double as a picnic table for two.

“Desperately Seeking Susan” Strands:

Nicole Miller was inspired by the opulence of Versailles for her collection, but she layered on the pearl strands and mixed her metals like it was 1989.

Chunky Chains:

The not-so-subtle spring trend of yellow gold statement chain jewelry rocked both the Rodarte runways and the venerable Diane von Furstenberg shows.

Wonder Woman Cuffs:

Fight for your rights in your satin tights with this look from Escada, jewelry hounds. Invisible plane not included.

Butterflies, Florals and Pastels:

Don’t worry, wall-flowers. Tory Burch and Jenny Packham showcased a bevy of butterflies and blossoms in their  collections.

And Badgley Mishka simply stunned with an array of pastel bracelets to match the light-as-air frocks that sashayed down the runway.

Rachel Zoe? Get out your notepad, sister.

Bridal Goes Berserk:

Nice day for a white wedding? In an attempt to fill the avant-garde space left when Alexander McQueen took his final bow, Thom Browne put on a fright fest that could best be described as ‘What Ever Happened to Baby Jane’ chic.

Perfect for your next trip to the asylum, ladies.

Thoughts on your favorite looks? There are a few more days left, jewelry hounds, so stay tuned for a final wrap up!

Designer jewelry collections are a dime-a-dozen these days. From Real Housewives to Bachelorettes and beyond, it seems every C-list reality star with 15 minutes of fame thinks they have the fashion smarts to design bling real women want to wear.

It ain’t that easy, folks.

So when I see a designer jewelry collection with REAL fashion street cred behind it? It’s like finding a needle in the proverbial fashion haystack – and I have to share it with my fellow jewelry hounds.

Enter the “ELLE Time & Jewelry Collection” debuting on Jewelry.com this week!

Yes, THE ELLE  – as in the iconic Paris-based, fashion magazine that started during WWII and evolved into the world’s #1 fashion publication. Not only was ELLE responsible for encouraging the ‘pants revolution’ back in the 40s, freeing women from the confines of stockings and skirts (huzzah!), they were the first publication to be founded and run entirely by – women.  Love it!

I love their fashion credo even more:

“We believe clothing without accessories is like a party with no cake” (or champagne, as the case may be…)

Long story short? If you have the ELLE fashion juggernaut behind a jewelry collection? You know you’re going to have well-designed, versatile, stylish pieces at price points every woman will find worthy of their hard-earned cash.

Here are some of my favorite pieces from the new boutique:

ELLE Butterfly Pendant in Sterling Silver. Price: $150
ELLE Retro Ring in Sterling Silver. Price: $170

Or you can check out the whole collection here. And just between us? Take this coupon code with you to get an extra 20% Off through Sunday, July 28th with code: ELLE at checkout (shhhh…).

ELLE Rose Quartz and Mother-of-Pearl Earrings in Sterling Silver. Price: $120

And, as always, weigh in with your thoughts about the line here. I love to hear the jewelry hounds bark!

The CFDA Awards, or the Fashion Oscars, hit NYC Monday night – honoring achievements of Hilfiger, Olsen twins, and Johnny Depp.

Any place that brings fashion and Johnny Depp to one place is okay in our book! The Council of Fashion Designers of America Awards celebrated its 50th anniversary last night, with celebs and designers like Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Tommy Hilfiger, Kate Bosworth, Anna Wintour, and comedian and host Seth Meyers – in a dress.

Held at the Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center in the Big Apple, the rockstars of the fashion world and A-listers honored the best threads of the year. Top awards went to Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, who – with a tearjerking acceptance speech – took home Womenswear Designer of the Year. Reed Krakoff, handbag designer extraordinaire, and Tabitha Simmons, footwear maven took home Accessory Designer of the Year and Swarovski Award for Accessory Design, respectively.

Tommy Hilfiger received the Lifetime Achievement award while uber hunk Johnny Depp was given the Fashion Icon Award. Last year this award was given to Lady Gaga.

The sunny, springtime NYC air brought out fabulous jewelry trends among this group of fashionistas. Bold, turquoise-blue shoulder sweepers were the star trend of the night with the likes of Busy Phillips, Irene Neuwirth, Nicole Miller, Alexi Ashe and Tracy Reese all lighting up their ensemble with this look.

Wonder Woman cuffs continue to storm the red carpet as the go-to bling for 2012. Victoria’s Secret model Erin Heatherton (who wore a turquoise Michael Kors gown) wore matching gold cuffs. Solange Knowles and Sofia Bush also glittered in gold wrist wear.

But leave it to designer Betsey Johnson to turn heads at last night’s affair with her gold gown and accessories galore. Thanks Bets!

Big diamond news, jewelry hounds.

Giving birth to baby Maxwell isn’t the only new development in uber-celeb Jessica Simpson’s life these days. The singer/reality star/tv host/fashion mogul/celebrity mom just partnered with my Sugar Momma, Jewelry.com, to launch an exclusive boutique offering her fine diamond jewelry for we huddled masses yearning to bling free.

The collection is aptly called, (don’t we know it, sister), and the pieces feature diamonds, gold and sterling silver in versatile ring, earring, necklace and pendant designs.

The collection is aptly called, Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend (don’t we know it, sister), and the pieces feature diamonds, gold and sterling silver in versatile ring, earring, necklace and pendant designs.

What I like about Jessica’s diamond jewelry collection (aside from the budget-friendly price points – thanks, Jess!) are the personalized elements she brings to each piece – a hot trend these days showing up in designer lines I’ve been tracking for the upcoming season.

Also hot? Her affordable price points ranging from $69 – $899.

“Jewelry is a very personal expression that celebrates who you are and this collection is very much a reflection of who I am,” said Simpson in a release.
Jessica Simpson Butterfly Necklace in 10K Pink Gold with Diamonds

Exhibit A – Check out this butterfly pendant that uses the famous ‘J’ in Jess’s signature to make those perfectly pink gold butterfly wings flutter like a pair of Daisy Dukes on a windy day.

Jessica Simpson Stackable Ring in 10K Tri-Tone Gold with Diamonds

I also like that she creates versatile pieces you can mix and match like this super sweet stackable ring set featuring all three of her signature silhouettes – the butterfly, the heart and the cross .

And there are many more to choose from – from creative cross necklaces to locket looks to drop earrings and then some. All timeless and trendy. Just like our Jess.

So. What have we learned, jewelry hounds? When it comes to identifying the proper food group for tuna, our beloved Jessica might be a bit (ahem) ‘slow on the uptake’. But a recent Forbes article putting her on the Celebrity 100: Ones to Watch list proves she’s the sharpest tack in the drawer when it comes to bringing her unique fashion sense to America. Ba-ling!
And (shameless plug alert) her taste in partners – birthing and business – is impeccable.

New York Fall 2012 Fashion Week: Standout Hues, Headpieces, & Jaw-Dropping Earrings

New York Fashion Week Fall 2012 Ready-To-Wear came to a close last week, leaving us with color trends and accessory must haves come September. We’ve got all the details on Marc Jacobs, Oscar de la Renta, Betsey Johnson, Elie Tahari and more.

Throughout awards season and Couture Fashion Week in Paris, head toppers have made their way into the spotlight. Everything from headbands, a la Gossip Girl, and hats that could stop traffic like those we saw at the Royal Wedding have been a source of inspiration for designers and what we saw at NY Fashion Week was no different.

Marc Jacobs brought a whole new meaning to floppy hats when models sporting his Fall 2012 RTW collection were topped off with huge multicolor mink hats. We’ll be sure to keep an eye out this fall for anyone walking the NYC streets wearing one.

Donna Karan’s show was quite the opposite with nearly all of the models donning mini fedoras that matched the gray, black or red ensembles.

Nicholas Kunz took inspiration from western and Deco references in the latest Nicholas K collection. Cowboy hats took over this runway show that was filled with fringe and horse hair-accented parkas.

Taking a similar approach, Carlos Miele brought a southwestern flair to his fall show. Inspired by his Brazilian heritage, ponchos and capes with geometric designs were topped off with flattop cowboy, or gaucho, hats.

Anna Sui makes several appearances in this Fashion Week recap, making her one of our favorites for her work with accessories. Several models walking her catwalk were topped with knit ski hats that appeared to be looking back at us. The rich colors used added a pop to the ensembles.

Trends of the 1920s and 30s, as previously stated as making a comeback this year, were apparent in Norma Kamali’s Fall 2012 collection. Most evident were the headpieces topping off the models. Just like any great fashion era, history repeats itself in this collection, with headwear reminiscent of the flapper look.

While Oscar de la Renta is turning 80 this year, he has no problem keeping his collection youthful and playful. Models all wore crystal and ribbon headbands in their hair to give his businesswoman-esque fall collection a fresh flair.

Dangles and ‘Jaw-Drop’ Earrings

Rarely do we see jewelry hit the catwalks during fashion week, but trust us when we say that our blinders are on when it comes to the bling. Several designers wowed us by accompanying their latest collections with earrings that dare to make a statement.

Naeem Khan used a black, gold and silver color palette on his latest collection, consisting of gowns, dresses and jackets. Models wore huge black dangle earrings that seemed to be the perfect accessory.

Betsey Johnson always has a flair for the over-the-top, but love that she paired her psychedelic collection with earrings that just barely dust the shoulder.

Oscar de la Renta and Catherine Malandrino also donned their models with eye-catching earrings that complimented the collections.

Fall Color Wheel

If you asked the designers of NY Fall 2012 Fashion Week what the color wheel will consist of come September, it’s fair to assume they would all say blue, burgundy, black and gold. Almost every show consisted of some or all of these hues, making them the obvious color MVPs to add to our wardrobes come fall.

Blue is not a complete surprise, as it was widely used among designers at Couture Fashion Week, as well as being noted as a top trend for 2012. Designers Anna Sui (with jaw-dropping blue statement necklaces), Milly, Christopher Kane, Elie Tahari, Matthew Williamson, Ohne Titel, Prabal Gurung and Oscar de la Renta were among many to incorporate bluesy bliss into their RTW collections.

No matter what anyone may say, black is the new black and will always be a wardrobe staple, especially for the fall and winter months. Whether a head-to-toe black ensemble or minute black undertones, one would be hard pressed to find a designer whose collection did not include it. Most popular was the timeless union of black and white, mostly seen in the collections of 3.1 Phillip Lim, Alicia & Olivia, Alexander Wang, Farah Angsana, Ohne Titel and Diane Von Furstenberg.

As we have noticed splashes of yellow gold jewelry making its way down red carpets, it’s no surprise to see metallics make their way down the catwalk. Designers Alexandre Herchovitch, Naeem Khan, Reem Acra, Prabal Gurung, Ralph Lauren, Rachel Zoe, Badgley Mischka and the belts on Calvin Klein’s collection were among those lighting up the runway with shimmering pieces.

What we may not have expected was the sudden wave of burgundy that came over almost every designer’s show last week. The wine-colored shade was everywhere from fur to leather jackets, and gowns to pantsuits. Jason Wu, Helmut Lang, Derek Lam, DKNY, Ralph Lauren, Elizabeth & James, Charlotte Ronson, and Christian Siriano were only a few of the designers
who incorporated this color, making it a true force to be reckoned with this fall.

Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week wrapped up this week and left us with jaw-dropping trends to look forward to in 2012. Check out Jewelry.com’s couture trend breakdown from Chanel to Jean Paul Gaultier and Alexis Mabille.

The televised broadcast of the Royal Wedding last April introduced us to the fascinator. Ever since then, tall, crazy-shaped hats pinned to the tops of women’s heads have slowly made their way into mainstream fashion. While some may wonder how this accessory even stays put on ones head, it looks like when it comes to the fashion industry, it’s not going anywhere anytime soon. And recent red carpet events such as the Golden Globes and the hair wear choices of Charlize Theron and Michelle Williams, it now appears that an ensemble is not complete until it is ‘topped off’ in one way or another.

French designer Alexis Mabille made floral elegance come to life this week with the blooming headpieces donned by models in his runway show. These enormous flowers that matched the brightly-hued gowns of this collection – and models’ faces – are sure to be a memorable look that many expect to be ‘off to the races.’ The garden-flair hair wear trend continued with Maurizio Galante topping his models off with halos of greenery and hanging flowers to accompany his collection that was inspired by springtime flora.

Jean Paul Gaultier brought a dash of sparkling darkness to his runway show in the form of black jewelry. The show, inspired by the late Amy Winehouse, featured models with beehive hairstyles, exotic black makeup and beauty marks. Large doorknocker black earrings, choker-style necklaces and wide cuffs were a common accessory on his runway show.

Earlier this month, we said blue was to be a color to watch for in 2012 when it comes to jewelry. A hue with so many shades available makes it a color that complements anyone, and Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel would agree. His runway show took flight with fashion inspired by airline stewardesses of the 1960s (PanAm, anyone?). The models were head to do in bluesy bliss, donning everything from headwear to long dangling earrings, nail polish and shoes, and of course, a breathtaking assortment of 60 ensemble featuring 150 shades of blue.

Glamour, Defined- Harry Winston Jewelry

“Talk to me, Harry Winston, tell me all about it!”, shouted Marilyn Monroe in ‘Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend’- and with good reason. Jeweler to movie stars and royalty alike, Harry Winston has owned and sold some of the most
famous gems in the world- legendary stones that have adorned the necks of kings and queens alike. Harry Winston jewelry is universally recognized to be some of
the most luxurious, beautiful, and buzzed-about finery in the world.

The child of Ukrainian immigrants, Harry Winston started working in his
father’s jewelry store as a young child, where he developed a precocious eye- at
twelve years old, he reportedly recognized a 2-carat emerald in a pawn shop,
bought it for 25 cents, and re-sold it for 800 dollars. This unerring talent for
spotting the rare and beautiful led him to create a jewelry empire; Harry
Winston has, at one time or another, owned the Hope Diamond, the Crown of
Charlemagne, the Blue Heart, and a plethora of other jaw-dropping pieces.
Winston often re-cut and re-fashioned these jewels to increase their value,
making him one of the most successful jewel merchants of all time. Harry Winston
jewelry is coveted and cooed over by stars and royalty alike- if you’re lucky
enough to get your hands on a Harry Winston piece, don’t let go! These timeless
dazzlers are worth their weight in beauty and lore.
