2013 Oscar Jewelry Trends: Vintage Jewelry, Diamonds, Pastels and the ‘Backlace’

The 85th Annual Academy Awards aired last night, bringing vintage jewelry looks, more diamonds than ever and a springtime pastel color palette to the red carpet. Get the scoop on jewelry worn by Jennifer Lawrence, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain and more.

It’s a good thing the carpet was red at last night’s Oscars, otherwise we would have seen no color whatsoever – and yes, we’re talking about the jewelry. Color gemstones were few and far between, forcing us to double check that this was indeed the year of Emerald. Whether dainty diamond studs, shoulder sweeping drops, or statement necklaces they were all decked in diamonds.

Bringing Diamonds ‘Back’

Diamond necklaces have finally made a comeback this awards season after a sparkle-less hiatus last year. And yesterday they found their way to the backs (yes, backs) of Anne Hathaway and Jennifer Lawrence thanks to stylist/designer Rachel Zoe. Jennifer Lawrence had a long dainty Chopard strand draped down the back of her Dior gown while Anne Hathaway sparkled with a Tiffany an Co. necklace dangling against the back of her Prada gown. Zoe must know a thing or two about good luck charms as both gals won in their categories.

Vintage Vixens

It seemed as though everywhere you turned another starlet was decked out in vintage jewels last night. Jennifer Garner paired her bordeaux Gucci gown with a 200-carat diamond necklace from the Neil Lane archives. Jessica Chastain accompanied a rose-toned Armani gown with a 1967 Harry Winston diamond and gold bracelet and diamond hoop earrings.

Fred Leighton must have opened up his 19th Century vault for Hollywood’s finest as a number of starlets were decked in this vintage bling. Kristen Stewart in rose gold and old mine cut 10 carat diamond necklace, Jennifer Aniston in several oval and cushion-cut diamond bracelets, and Nicole Kidman in black and gold enameled earrings were a few.

Sparkling Standouts

Standout jewelry moments from this year’s award show include Jennifer Hudson in brilliant blue opal Sutra earrings, Catherine Zeta-Jones in earth-toned diamond earrings by Lorraine Schwartz, Octavia Spencer who paired a cream Tadashi Shoji gown with rose-toned Lorraine Schwartz drop earrings, Renee Zelwegger who rocked a ruby cuff by Van Cleef & Arpels, and Jane Fonda, who brought a retro feel to the red carpet with a neon yellow Versace gown (with shoulder pads) and yellow gold earrings.

A Pastel Palette

With just a little less than a month until the official start to spring, there was no question spring was in the air on the red carpet. Blush, pale, and cream colored gowns draped the likes of Jennifer Lawrence in Dior Couture, Jessica Chastain in Armani Prive, Anne Hathaway in Prada, Charlize Theron in Christian Dior Couture, Amanda Seyfried in Alexander McQueen, Kristen Steward in Naeem Khan, Amy Adams in Oscar de la Renta, Zoe Saldana in Alexis Mabille, Octavia Spencer in Tadashi Shoji, and Queen Latifah in Badgley Mischka.

Maybe the gals of country music will color our jewelry world at the ACM Awards in April. Fingers crossed!
