How do you save the planet and look good doing it? Look no further than fashion icon, Dame Vivienne Westwood, who’s channeling some of her “do-gooder” design energy to an often-overlooked jewelry category:

Palladium

Many of you may not be familiar with this light-weight white-colored precious metal, but you should be. Just as durable as white gold and platinum but much more affordable – palladium is often used in jewelry design to bring price points down to mere mortal levels.

In a move wiser than a Charlie Sheen rehab visit, Palladium Alliance International partnered with Westwood to create a line of palladium jewels to give their product some much-needed press while showcasing the designer’s love of all things earth-friendly.

The result is the acorn-laden Vivienne Westwood “Get A Life” Palladium Collection, which will debut during London Fashion Week in February and will be available exclusively in Vivienne Westwood boutiques in London and Los Angeles this spring.

“We wanted Dame Vivienne Westwood to showcase Palladium to the world because of her continued exploration and reinterpretation of history, combined with a tireless individualism which has cemented her reputation as the UK’s most culturally significant fashion designer. We believe this creativity and individuality make her the perfect fit for the brand and her designs will complement our metal,” said John Stark, chairman for the Palladium Alliance International in a release.
I know most of us won’t be near Ms. Westwood’s boutiques anytime soon, so I’ve picked out a few of my favorite palladium bridal styles for your drooling pleasure from sample sale site, JewelClub (click on the image for more info)
The prices are incredible, and the styling is just as classic and elegant as the more traditional platinum or white gold piece.
And it’s cool to be like Vivienne Westood. Thoughts?

Celebrity engagement news is breaking big today! Here’s the scoop:

From “Black Swan” to Baby Momma:

Not only is Natalie Portman engaged to her (gorgeous!) choreographer boyfriend, Benjamin Millepied, they’re also expecting their first child. The Black Swan star met her hubby-to-be on the set last year (he choreographed all of her numbers), and the Oscar buzz is building along with her little ballet-dancing bun in the oven.

Portman has been on the red carpet all month promoting the film (and Dior’s new perfume), but despite a mention of ‘eating a lot’ lately – this news is a total shock.

No ring sighting yet, but stay tuned.

Hef’s Getting Hitched:

The other shocker today is news that everyone’s favorite bachelor octogenarian popped the question to his 24-year-old playmate girlfriend, Crystal Harris.

“After the movie tonight, Crystal & I exchanged gifts. I gave Crystal a ring. A truly memorable Christmas Eve,” Hefner, 84, tweeted. “When I gave Crystal the ring, she burst into tears. This is the happiest Christmas weekend in memory.”

Later, he clarified, “Yes, the ring I gave Crystal is an engagement ring. I didn’t mean to make a mystery out of it. A very merry Christmas to all.”

What kind of ring exactly remains to be seen, but my guess is Hef will make sure his bunny’s got enough ‘carats’ to keep her satisfied.

But celebs aren’t the only folks with romance on their minds. With New Year’s Eve around the corner, many questions have yet to be popped. So fellas? If you need a little nudge in the right direction – check out the amazing post-Christmas engagement ring deals on sample sale sites like JewelClub.

In the meantime, congrats to the happy couples!

‘Sister Wives’ Creates Claddagh Ring Craze

Rings and romance. For centuries we lowly humans have been using metal bands around our fingers to say “Go ahead.” or “Beat it!”  And while the mainstream tradition in this country is to don a diamond ring and a wedding band, the Claddagh ring is a favorite of the Irish.

And polygamists, apparently.

The latest reality phenom, Sister Wives, tells the tale of a Utah man, his 4 ‘brides’ and their day-to-day shenanigans. Hollywood Life reports the Fab 5 shut down a Utah jewelry store recently to get a Claddagh ring for the newest member of their clan.

Curious about the Claddagh? Here’s the lowdown, according to Wikipedia:

The Claddagh’s design features two hands clasping a heart, usually topped with a crown. There are four ways to wear the Claddagh: on the right hand with the heart oriented away to show you’re single; on the right hand with the heart turned in to show you’re in a relationship; on the left hand turned out to show you’re engaged; on the left hand turned in to show you’re married.

Confused? Think of how Brigham Young must have felt.

I think the Claddagh is a lovely way to rings thing up if you’re looking for something different. And there are both men’s and women’s styles available – like these affordable looks on Jewelry.com:

For the curious, Sister Wives airs on TLC on Sundays at 10pm. And Oprah is grilling the group on today’s show!

Cyrstal Bowersox’s Engagement Ring Revealed

While the jewelry hound pack knows I love myself a diamond, I’ve always been a fan of the non-traditional engagement ring. Ever since Princess Diana got that stunning sapphire for her ill-fated union waaaaay back in 1981, I’ve been fascinated by brides who opt out of the diamond for their ring finger bling.

American Idol runner-up, Crystal Bowersox, isn’t the first person you’d think of to keep Diana’s company, but People reports her diamond-free engagement ring was all the rage at her surprise wedding to fellow folkie and longtime friend, Brian Walker last weekend.

The bride wore an organic, hemp and cotton wedding gown from Vermont designer Tara Lynn, according to People and sealed the deal with a 1.1-carat princess-cut ruby ring designed by Walker and crafted by Chicago’s Traci Coughlin and Steve Quick Jewelers.

“There are no diamonds to be found as we don’t believe in the violence and injustice that occurs within the diamond trade industry,” Bowersox explained. “Both rings feature the masonry symbol, an infinity 8, and the Sanskrit symbol for the sound ‘om’ and a personal design that for us represents three: Brian, Crystal, and Tony.”

I won’t judge her ‘diamond-free’ political statement , but I do love her ruby replacement. And for brides and grooms on a bauble budget, rubies and other gemstone styles are often a more affordable option than the traditional diamond.

I’m afraid I can’t find a picture of Crystal’s ring (yet!), but I found this ruby wedding band option on Jewelry.com if you want to go the Bowersox route for your big day. Or for any day, by golly.

What do my fellow jewelry hounds think of the non-traditional engagement ring trend? Anyone out there have one? Weigh in!

Affordable Engagement Rings

Buying a diamond engagement ring can be the most important (and stressful) jewelry purchase you can make. While the standard protocol requires fellas to shell out two months’ salary, for many folks that’s about as realistic as finding true love on “The Bachelorette”.

So what do you do when you want to tie the knot without breaking the bank? Some thoughts:

1. Vintage Value

Diamond divas never utter the word ‘used’. It’s vintage, dahling – and there are many deals to be had in this diamond engagement ring category. Plus you can satisfy the ‘eco-friendly’ urge since you’re buying a rock that’s already in the coffers. But be careful to have it appraised before you pull the trigger.

2. Color Your World

This is my favorite emerging engagement ring trend – wearing a gemstone instead of a diamond. Prince Charles gave a stunning sapphire to Diana back in the day and now millions of women are wearing their favorite colored stone instead of the traditional white ice.

I found this stunning sapphire ring on sample sale site, JewelClub – originally $859 now (gulp) only $231.48 with their crazy discount (use the code: INSIDER to become a free ‘friends and family’ member).

3. Shop Clearance

With a little time and a creative eye, anyone can find a deal so great they’ll be telling that story to friends and fam instead of how Jimmy popped the question. While there are a host of credible outlets for discount diamonds, check out JewelClub first. This classic pear-shaped ring is $462.74 down from $2129. Yowza.

4. Palladium: “The Other White Metal”

No longer the forgotten step-child of the precious metal world, palladium is emerging from the shadows as a (MUCH) more affordable option than gold. It looks like platinum or white gold – but it costs much less per ounce. And it’s just as durable.

This 1/2carat palladium solitaire on JewelClub is only $572 down from $2649.

So what have we learned? Clearly some engagement rings traditions are meant to be broken – especially in this economy. You really can find a ring you love that doesn’t cost the equivalent of a small sedan.

Here’s to true love, diamond deals…and more room in the budget for an island honeymoon with fruity cocktails! Happy Friday the 13th, jewelry hounds!

‘Neil Lane Bridal’ Tickles Tinseltown

Celebrity jeweler, Neil Lane, never met a Hollywood wedding he didn’t bedazzle, so his client list is long and loaded with heavy hitters like Ellen Degeneres, Nicole Richie and the entire Bachelor/Bachelorette franchise.

Last Thursday, the designer celebrated his new, moderately priced bridal collection with Kay Jewelers at a Hollywood fete, and the red carpet was loaded with leading ladies.

The ‘cutest couple’ award goes to Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi, who showed off their Neil Lane wedding bands.

Ashlee Simpson Wentz flashed her 4-carat Neil Lane engagement ring from rocker hubby, Pete Wentz, while confessing of her sister, Jessica, “She is happy, so we are all really happy.”

Kristin Davis showed up in black and white diamonds, confessing to reporters that a 3rd SATC movie is ‘unlikely’. (Ya think?)

And Eva Longoria Parker stunned in black Gustavo Cadile and loads of diamond ice.

I think the Neil Lane Bridal collection is the perfect way for humble grooms to give a celebrity twist to the bended knee ritual thanks to prices that are hundreds of thousands less than a typical Lane look.

Check out Jewelry.com for more info on the Kay Jewelers/Neil Lane partnership – and check out the vintage-inspired product pics here on kay.com. Yum!

June 14, 2010

Jewelry hounds, mark your calendars. I just got word that my favorite jewelry sample sale site, JewelClub, is launching a rare vault sale where they’re knocking off 25% on 18 select styles.

That’s 25% off WHOLESALE!

Um, yeah. Now that I’ve got your attention…

The sale will start this Thursday, June 17th but will only last a few days (through Monday, June 21st) – and like most big discount sales the inventory is limited and may go quickly.

I have only seen this teaser piece to whet your whistle – it’s a three-stone bridal ring that’s over $3,000 off the suggested retail price. (insert lower jaw-drop here)

But brides and grooms aren’t the only audience they’re targeting; they assure me there will be trendy pieces, jewelry box staples and colorful creations all ripe for the picking.

So be sure to sign up on www.jewelclub.com, using the code: INSIDER (if you haven’t already) to get in the loop on this super sale. I won’t steer you wrong on this. Their prices are as low as a Mariah Carey neckline.
