Angelina Jolie’s Red Carpet Emeralds: Take Two

Angelina Jolie wore an emerald Versace gown on the 2011 Golden Globe red carpet tonight, with tiny emerald earrings to match. While this DOES take her out of her boring black/no jewelry funk, why do I feel like I’ve been in this movie before?

Oh yeah….

So for those who were keeping track of my double-diamond dare to Ms. Jolie (if she wore anything but black and basics I would chug a glass of bubbly) – consider me a loser. But another Angelina Jolie emerald statement somehow feels like cheating.  Just sayin’.

Stay tuned for my full Golden Globe jewelry recap – a red carpet where dresses out-sparkled the jewelry, my pretty-in-pink prediction came true, and the only thing big? Was the hair.

And the price tag for Dame Hellen Mirren’s $1.6 million Cartier necklace. Hello, lover.

The Jewelry Insider

January 11, 2011

The 2011 Golden Globe Awards are likely to give us jewelry-gawking fools the most star-studded red carpet yet – with heavy hitters like Angelina Jolie, Natalie Portman, Anne Hathaway, Nicole Kidman, Halle Berry, Michelle Williams and Julianne Moore (deep inhale) all nominated, not to mention TV beauties like Kyra Sedgwick and Lea Michele.

So. Before I launch into my jewelry fashion predictions, please consider this invitation to join me and the rest of the jewelry-loving blogosphere as we live Tweet the red carpet using the hashtag:

#globejewelry

I’ll be starting the fun (and popping the champagne) at 6pm EST (3pm PST,) but the witching hour is probably going to hit around 7pmish. Stay tuned – and weigh in!

OK. While making any kind of fashion prediction is usually just an exercise in being wrong – here are my thoughts for the Globes:

1. Bare Necked Ladies

While statement necklaces were the go-to jewelry staple of 2008 and 2009 the look started to wane in 2010 and (I think) will be hard to find in 2011 – even though they’re my favorite jaw-dropper of a jewel on the carpet. Sigh.

2. Vintage Vixens

Vintage gems are always a favorite red carpet choice among A-listers and their stylists (Rachel Zoe, et al) – and with blackened metal trending big for Spring 2011, I’m expecting to see a lot of this category on Sunday night. Especially on stars like Michelle Williams and Anne Hathaway.

3. Pink Is the New Purple

The 2010 Globes were all about purple gowns and gems – and this year? I’m going with pink. Pink dresses, pink gemstone jewelry, pink handbags. I might be way off here, but if color authority, Pantone, picked blushy Honeysuckle as their Spring 2011 color topper – I’m thinkin’ the Hollywood set is going to follow suit. Gwyneth Paltrow doesn’t have a monopoly on this color, people.

4. It’s Not Easy Being Green

The last two years saw emeralds shine bright at the big awards shows (e.g. Angelina Jolie’s 2009 Oscar earrings, Julianne Moore’s Bvlgari beauties at last year’s Globes). In 2011, though, the precious gemstone category is all about sapphires and rubies.

Kate Middleton getting Princess Diana’s sapphire engagement ring hurtled the category to new heights this holiday, and ruby engagement rings are making big news on stars like Jessica Simpson, American Idol’s Crystal Bowersox and Bachelorette/Soap Star/Skating With the Star, Rebecca Budgi. I’ve seen Nicole Kidman rock the red before. And Natalie Portman has the baby blues these days so….

5. Angelina Jolie Will Disappoint Me

I think you all know how I feel about Ms. Jolie’s lack of imagination when it comes to her red carpet chocies lately. Was her emerald Oscar miracle a one-hit-wonder? I hope I’m wrong, but my guess is we’ll be getting more black and more diamond basics. If not?  I’ll chug an entire glass of champagne while Tweeting. Twist my arm.

So there you have it. Those five predictions along with a smattering of statement earrings and yellow gold are the jewelry styles I’m looking for on the 68th Annual Golden Globe red carpet this Sunday.

What do you guys think? Pretty darn close? Or pass the Perrier-Jouet?

Celebrity Jewelry Gossip

Juicy celebrity jewelry tidbits are both naughty and nice this week. Here’s a blingy roundup:

Pete Doherty: Jewelry Designer/Jailbird

From the ‘Most Unlikely Celebrity to Launch a Jewelry Line’ category comes news that badboy Brit rocker and ex Kate Moss love, Pete Doherty, came out this week with a bauble collection for men. Just in time for his court appearance for drug possession.

The fifteen-piece range was inspired by “trinkets … ivory, cigarette tins, old cases, old glass,” Doherty told WWD between cigarette drags at the launch party. “It’s just a shame I can’t afford to buy them myself,” he sighed, referring to the $663 to $13,600 price range. “They cost a fortune.”

Courtney Love: Grrrl Rocker/Jewelry Thief

Just when you think her annoying self-destructive phase is over, Courtney Love never fails to self-sabatoge. This time she’s taken a page from the Lindsay Lohan play book by ‘losing’ borrowed jewelry from a celebrity jewelry house.

The Hole frontwoman was slapped with a lawsuit from Jacob & Co. for not returning jewelry worth nearly $114,000. According to USA Today, Love borrowed two white gold and diamond chains, a white gold, floral-design mesh bracelet and a pair of white gold and diamond pave hoop earrings on Sept. 21 from the New York jeweler – but only returned the bracelet. She now owes $113,700 for the oversight.

And all of us for the 30 seconds it took to read this post.

SouljaBoy: Rapper/Investment Specialist

What do Glenn Beck and SouljaBoy have in common? A penchant for dispersing investment advice, apparently. The rapper rivals Lil’ Wayne in the bling department, wearing jewelry creations that weigh more than a toddler.

When asked about his $3 million jewelry stash’s investment value, Mr. Boy told Sway from MTV,

“Gold is the best thing going, all the people that’s watching, honestly … all of my jewelry together … gold is where it’s at.”

Sharon Stone: Celebrity Charity Case

Joining the likes of Angelina Jolie and Christina Applegate, Sharon Stone is putting her name on a jewelry line for charity, according to Luxist.

Sharon Stone has been the face of Damiani jewelry since 2008 and collaborated with them on  a new line of jewelry, The Maji, that benefits the charity initiative, The Clean Water Project.

The collection is the first in the series of “Sharon Stone for Damiani” lines and features rings, pendants, bracelets and earrings with rough diamonds set on burnished gold or silver – each signed by the Cougar Queen herself.

Overacting lessons and oversized ego, not included.

It’s never dull in blingville, jewelry hounds. Send me your gem-filled gossip, and I’ll try to include it for my next roundup!

Angelina Jolie Shines at “The Tourist” Premiere

Angelina Jolie’s red carpet fashion choices lately have left me, well, underwhelmed. There are only so many incarnations of the black gown/diamond stud combo we jewelry hounds are expected to endure on the most beautiful A-lister in the world, right?

But she SO redeemed herself at last night’s New York premiere for her latest flick, The Tourist, in a sultry winter white Versace number and unique emerald-cut beryl earrings that sent me scrambling to find out more.

So here’s the skinny:

Of course someone as gorg. as A-Jo has to have her own personal jeweler, right? Enter, Robert Procop – Asprey’s former CEO who’s bejeweled Brad Pitt’s better half for the past ten years or so.

Turns out, the earrings she wore on the carpet last night are part of a collection she and Procop collaborated on together – with all proceeds benefiting Jolie’s personal charity, The Education Partnership for Children of Conflict.

And the emerald ring Brad Pitt wore on the carpet last night also served as inspiration for one of the pieces, WWD reports.

Unfortunately, we mere mortals won’t be able to snag some for our own collection since the items are only available to Procop’s personal clients – and are priced accordingly. Whatevs. As long as it’s for the children…

While these beryl beauties aren’t as stunning as the emerald earrings Jolie made famous at the 2009 Oscars, they are a WELCOME reprieve from the snoresville stud earring Jolie had in heavy rotation while promoting her last film, Salt. (see my earlier rant here for more)

Although it’s hard to complain when she’s got the best accessory of all on her arm… Just bring Brad and I’ll keep the snark to myself.

Angelina Jolie’s Stud Earrings: Boring or Blingtastic?

When Angelina Jolie wore those stunning emerald earrings to the Oscars in 2009, I forgave every boring, black, Elvira-esque red carpet snorefest she made me endure from my glamorous spot on the sartorial sofa.

But the emerald glow has faded and, well, I just can’t take it anymore.

If A-listers like Julia Roberts and Jennifer Aniston are going to “black pants suit” and “gold hoop” their way through their red carpet careers, I thought at least Angelina – that Brad Pitt-stealing, action-adventure-starring, minx of a movie star – would bring us the lower-jaw-drop moments we so desperately crave.

Here she is in Los Angeles earlier this month for the Salt premiere. Black dress, diamond studs. Wake me when it’s over.

Paris this week: Different dress shade, same diamond drudgery.

And in Berlin she didn’t even bother!

Maybe she’s making a statement that the woman who has everything shouldn’t bask in the glory of a diamond tiara every time she makes a public appearance. But I’d settle for a chandelier earring from time to time – maybe a cuff?

Is anyone else as bored as I am? Or do I need to spend time worrying about more important matters. Like the Vogue September issue?

Will the Oscars be a Snorefest?

It’s what we jewelry hounds wait for all year – the Oscar red carpet coverage on E!

I love every minute of it – from Guiliana Rancic’s inappropriate use of ‘honey’ with A-listers, dames and sirs alike (Helen Mirren? Run don’t walk) to Seacrest’s cleavage-staring interviews. I will miss the wild card Kathy Griffin coverage – but I suppose I can wait for the Joan Rivers roundup this year to give me a good guffaw.

But I’ve gotta tell you, I’m a little worried at the potential for a serious snorefest this year. Avatars are replacing Angelina. There’s no Brad/Jen red carpet bump-in to anticipate. And while Mo’Nique and Anna Kendrick are certainly worthy nominees – they just don’t generate the excitement of, say, an Anne Hathaway or a Kate Hudson on the red carpet.

Penelope Cruz and Sandra Bullock are both stunners, but we’ve so ‘been there done that’ all year with them, I’ve got to admit – I’m feeling a little bored with both.

So who is left that’s going to bust out with the bling this year? What ingenues are going to give us a good Gwynnie moment? Kristen Stewart will be too busy brooding with her black eyeliner. Inglorious Basterds’, Diane Kruger, is a possibility – but she doesn’t have the A-list star power to make a huge impact like, say a ‘Julia’ or a ‘Nicole’ did back in the day.

Perhaps I should be happy with the possibility of the first woman getting Best Director or the adorable Gabourey Sidibe living out her dream – but a jewelry hound needs her diamond drama at the Oscars! I’m afraid this year I might have to double down on the champagne to get the giddys.

What do you all predict? Weigh in!

Don’t forget to Tweet with me during the red carpet on Sunday if you’re in to multi-tasking! And stay tuned for all the follow-up coverage here and on Jewelry.com all next week.

The Jewelry Insider

December 30, 2009

Another year down, jewelry hounds, another year of frivolous fun in jewelry land. We’ve seen red carpets sparkle (and stink up the joint), the entire D-list attempt to start their own jewelry lines, stunning diamond auction sales despite a Bernie Madoff-induced luxury melt down, and plenty of ‘lower jaw-drop’ moments.

As we bloggers are predisposed to do this time of year, I’ve taken a look back at 2009 and culled together some of my favorite jewelry moments with some of yours. The result? This little Top Ten list for your reading pleasure.

Thanks to all for joining this shiny place of jewel-filled sarcasm, schadenfreude and joy. Here’s to another bling-filled year!

10. Brad Pitt’s Diamond Daughter

The third most popular post this year involved a random tidbit detailing Brad Pitt’s diamond jewelry gift to his daughter, Shiloh. Lesson learned? Some kids have all the luck. And always write about Brad Pitt.

9. Technicolor Diamonds

Lower jaw-drop moment of the year alert: Despite the economic woes taking most of us mortals to our knees this year, some lucky as*&, I mean, folks snapped up some stunning natural-color diamonds off the auction block in 2009 – inlcuding the Wittelsbach blue diamond that broke the record for most expensive rock ever sold at auction.

8. Woodstock/Mad Men Mania

The 60s came back with a vengeance this year, with Woodstock celebrating it’s 40th anniversary and Mad Men taking the entertainment and fashion worlds by storm. Jewelry fashion followed suit, with this fourth most popular post for 2009.

7. Celebrity Jewelry Robbery Ring

Just when you thought Hollywood couldn’t get any more tawdry, a ring of wannabe reality star youngster thugs robbed D-listers like Paris, Lindsay, and that vacuous brunette from The Hills of their beloved family jewels. The horror! And they didn’t even get an agent out of it…

6. Paris Rules

Nope. Not talking about ‘the Hilton’ – despite writing about her over a dozen times this year (sorry ’bout that). Paris, France was – yet again – my favorite Fashion Week by far, with jewelry exploding all over the catwalks. Bigger, better, bling-filled bliss.

5. Vampire Chic

From Team Edward to True Blood, it was all about the undead in 2009. Enter: blood red rubies, cross necklaces, vampire-inspired jewelry lines, and lots of black eye-linered brooding. Oh – and angst.

4. Paula Abdul – From Mess to Maven

Oh, Paula. How you confuse me so. You gave us some of the absolute worst fashion moments on the red carpet in 2009, yet somehow your jewelry line sells out in minutes? And recently, you’ve made some classic red carpet appearances with jewelry that actually fits the occasion. Let’s hope you have enough sense (and money in the coffers) to keep your current stylist now that Ellen is stealing your spotlight.

3. Celebrity Engagement Rings

From The Bachelor bungle, to my second most popular post – Ivanka Trump’s engagement ring bling – the celebrity world of betrothal never disappoints. Here are some of the year’s highlights for your drooling pleasure.

2. Angelina’s Oscar Emeralds

The most popoular post of 2009 was my early report of Angelina Jolie’s emerald Oscar jewelry. Sorry, Jen – 2010 is gonna be your year.

1. Michelle Obama

Mighty Michelle jump-started a sinking fashion industry when her husband’s historic campaign and election took the country by storm. So I joined the throngs of other fashion bloggers who followed her every move in those first few months of 2009. The good news is, she continues to breathe fresh life into the jewelry world with statement pieces, brooches and classic pearls akimbo. No matter your political persuasion, you gotta give it up for bling you can believe in.

Did I miss any of your favs? Weigh in, jewelry hounds!

Like Charlize Theron for Dior, Julianne Moore is entering the luxury lexicon of jewelry spokesmodel-dom, appearing in famous watch and jewelry brand, Bvlgari’s, latest campaign peddling their ‘Serpenti’ line, among other styles.

Almost as jaw-dropping as her nude photo shoot is the pair of Colombian pear-shaped emerald earrings she’ll wear, weighing 52.86 and 62.32 carats each. The stunning emeralds were part of Bvlgari’s first retrospective exhibition at Il Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome earlier in the year.

Dare I say that they rival Angelina’s emerald Oscar earrings from Lorraine Schwartz? I’m just saying…

The Serpenti collection is designed around snakes and scale shapes – a slithering genre that’s trending big for 2010 (including Brangelina’s line for Asprey). Bvlgari touts the new collection as a return to the design aesthetic that made the brand famous to begin with, with the A-lister ads (called “Eccentric Charisma”) set to debut in February.

Does Julianne Moore’s tasteful nudity and amazing emeralds make Bvlgari more attractive? I’ve always admired her talent, but have never taken her for the ‘spokesmodel’ type – so it’s a surprise they would choose her out of all the other ‘sell-outs’, I mean, serious actresses out there.

What do you guys think?

Angelina and Brad Pitt – Jewelry Designers?

Hollywood’s hottest couple is putting their star power behind a new snake-inspired jewelry line. See all the slithering details.

Angelina Jolie’s huge emerald earrings at the Oscars were perhaps the most talked about jewelry statement of the year, but now she’s using jewelry to wow us in a different way. Jolie and hubby, Brad Pitt created a gold and silver jewelry line called The Protector for British jeweler, Asprey, according to Women’s Wear Daily. The collection is inspired by the snake, a symbol Jolie considers ‘the protector’ of her family.

The line includes diamond, black diamond and pave rings in addition to bracelets, earrings, men’s cuff links and dress studs with prices starting at $525. All net proceeds will go to Education Partnership for Children of Conflict, an organization co-founded by Jolie in 2006 that seeks to educate children who are victims of war, conflict and natural disasters.

“These are the children who most need a safe place to learn, a place to heal, a place to learn reconciliation, a place to build a better future and a place – to just be children,” Jolie said of her charity. “Yet the education for these children is often forgotten. Tens of millions of children and adolescents in conflict are not in school.”

The Protector line will go on sale this week in Asprey stores in London, New York, Beverly Hills, Tokyo and Dubai. For a closer look, visit the Jewelry.com Facebook page for a photo album showing more of the collection.
