This year’s Grammy Awards were full of not only great musical performances (hello Lady Gaga tribute to David Bowie!), but also great jewelry. T Swift showed off her version of the choker trend with a colorful gemstone necklace, while Lady Gaga matched her bedazzled blue eye makeup with some pretty ear bling. Demi Lovato took a jewelry risk (and totally rocked it!) with a body chain and several diamond rings, while Carrie Underwood showed up in a gorgeous 48 ct necklace (a Valentine’s Day gift from her husband).

The 65th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards aired Sunday night, bringing us a red carpet swarming with new jewelry and fashion trends as well as some expected disappointments. Read on for the top five trends of the night.

Normally the morning after, we dish on the shoulder-sweeping earrings or Wonder Woman cuffs that have made frequent red carpet appearances over the years. As those trends either take a back seat or simply become the norm, we welcome some new and exciting trends to add to your jewelry box.

Cocktail Rings
Finally! Hollywood has put a ring on it! And in the form of big, chunky diamonds and gemstone cocktail rings. Primetime TV’s finest rocked some cocktail rings that were large and in charge.

Zooey Deschanel matched an icy blue J. Mendel gown with an equally icy blue tourmaline ring by Chanel.

Modern Family’s Sarah Hyland was head-to-toe in emerald, 2013’s Color of the Year, pairing a green Caroline Herrera gown with Lorraine Schwartz green bling.

E! Red Carpet Hostess Guiliana Rancic rocked a $1 million diamond ring by Forevermark that would make even a Kardashian jealous!

Jessica Lange wore a black Escada gown accompanied with a Martin Katz cocktail ring. Kata Mara was sans any jewelry except for a large Irene Neuwirth ring that matched her J. Mendel gown. Other cocktail ring sitings included Sofia Vergara (obvi), Jane Krakowski, Christina Hendricks, Taylor Schilling

Green Goddesses

Whether it was the jewels or the gown, emerald was certainly the color of the night (Appropriate since the color gods at Pantone named it Color of the Year for 2013).

Standout looks that had us green with envy were Sarah Hyland (as mentioned before), Anna Chlumsky in Badgley Mischka, Lena Dunham in Prada, and Nancy O’dell.

Christina Hendricks looked ravishing, pairing a black down with emerald earrings and cocktail ring.

Sofia Vergara brought the bling once again with a Vera Wang gown paired with Multi color earrings and green ring by Lorraine Schwartz.

Anna Faris wore a cheerful yellow gown with a Fred Leighton green lizard brooch crawling up her back. Brooke Burke wore eye-catching jade earrings by Katerina Maxine.

Golden Girls
Yellow gold statement pieces continue to trend on the red carpet and are a perfect accessory for the fall.

Girls actress Allison Williams paired a blue Ralph Lauren gown with glowing Fred Leighton gold jewels.

Taylor Schilling rocked a white Thakoon paired with Jorge Adeler jewels, including a citrine and gold cocktail ring.

Nashville’s Connie Britton paired a blue and gold Naeem Khan number with gold stacked bangles by Cathy Waterman.

Padma Lakshmi wore huge gold earrings and gold cuff by Robert Lee Morris that paired well with her Kaufman Franco gown.

Other golden jewelry moments include Cobie Smulders (who couldn’t remember who designer her jewelry – YIKES), Jane Lynch and Merritt Wever.

Ladies in Red

While not a jewelry trend, we do pay respect to red carpet color trends that could inspire your own jewelry box collection.

Red frocks included Sofia Vergara, Morena Baccarin, Carla Gugino in Georges Chakra, Heidi Klum in Versace, Kaley Cuoco in Vera Wang, Kelly Osbourne in Jenny Packham, Linda Cardinelli in Donna Karan Atelier and more.

Babes in Blue

Every shade of blue made an appearance on the red carpet, capping off a month of sapphire birthstone bliss.

Tina Fey left black at home and rocked a bright blue Narciso Rodriguez gown. Deschanel sisters, Emily and Zooey both wore light pastel gowns by Houghton and J. Mendel, respectively. Jane Krakowski, Jessica Pare, Allison Williams, Maria Menounos, and Guiliana Rancic also wore standout blue gowns.

And leave it to a country girl to be the only notable celeb rocking a diamond necklace. Carrie Underwood paired a purple Romona Keveza gown with Johnathon Arndt jewels. Guess we will have to wait for the Country Music Awards for our next diamond necklace moment. Oh well.

Jewelry hounds, I’m not trying to be disagreeable. Red carpet jewelry and fashion gawking is certainly not saving any oil-soaked pelicans or curing cancer anytime soon. But when Jersey Shore‘s Snooki looks better than half the divas doing the rounds at the Country Music Television (CMT) Awards, you know you’re in for a long night.

And what is Snooki doing at the CMT Awards?

Let’s start with the good. Taylor Swift. Always a fashion winner. Love the straight hair. Hoops. Galliano. Louboutin. What’s not to like?

What’s not to like? How about this unfortunate statement necklace choice by Kellie Pickler?

Or this bizarre lace mini green monster thing on Hayden Panitierre?

Or the weird day-glo dress meets sparkly gold teardrop earring look on Leann Rimes?

Or Laura Bell Bundy’s gold stripper, I mean, red carpet get-up?

Or Miranda Lambert’s Snooki impression?

Or this ho-hum look an the usually stunning Faith Hill (love the trendy big hoops, though)?

Clearly this battle of the blonde bombshells left me battered and bruised. Am I going off the rails here? Or is Country Music in desperate need of a Rachel Zoe makeover?

Carrie Underwood flashed her diamond engagement ring this week after news hit that her hockey-player boyfriend, Mike Fisher, popped the question. Trouble was? No one could find any details about the little tidbits we jewelry hounds find most important – carat count, cut, and COST!

But People Magazine reports that the large center stone we could barely make out in all the photos isn’t just any old diamond, folks. It’s a flawless yellow diamond designed in a platinum setting by her by jeweler Johnathon Arndt, who said in a release,

“This ring is a symbol of love from Mike Fisher to Carrie Underwood,” as he wished the couple congratulations.

The five+ carat rock is reportedly worth over $150,000

Johnathon Arndt Gallery of Jewels came into the national spotlight when they formed an alliance with the Academy of Country Music and The Country Music Association. His Gallery of Jewels is an “invitation only” Gallery with only six locations Worldwide.

Here are some other links of Carrie’s red carpet bling over the past year if you’re curious how Arndt bedazzled her for her high profile events. I can only imagine what the wedding will bring!

The 2009 Grammy Awards brought us glittering diamond divas, gauche attempts at rock and roll glamour and gasp-worthy no-shows. Whitney Houston presented without slurring her words, Rhianna dropped out because boyfriend, Chris Brown, is in trouble with the law, and Paula Abdul showed up in a gown worthy of the lido deck on the Starship Enterprise – if it had a lido deck.

Just another day in the life of the music industry.

Lucky for us, musicians love to flaunt the ice, and the Los Angeles Staples Center was frozen over with it. Teen sensations and BFFs, Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus, looked all grown up in classic black. Taylor wore a floor-length Kaufman Franco number with Lorraine Schwartz brown diamonds, and Miley matched her moxy with black Max Azaria and Mimi So diamond danglers. Keep it up, ladies.

Grammy winner and heart warmer, Jennifer Hudson, wore square diamond dangle earrings and a matching bracelet that worked much better than the Roland Mouret dress that said ‘dinner napkin’ more than dazzle. And fellow American Idol, Fantasia rocked the ice on every surface from designers, H. Stern and First Lady-favorite, Loree Rodkin.

Not to be outdone was Katy Perry in H. Stern six-stone princess-cut diamond drop earrings, a diamond Sofia bangle bracelet and an H. Stern floral diamond Right Hand. Keyshia Cole brought out the big guns with her Damiani diamond statement necklace, and the wattage winner has to be my new favorite singing obsession, Adele, in over 30 carats of Stephen Russell diamonds. Take that Amy Winehouse!
Metallics made their usual appearance on a sequined Gwenyth Paltrow in Versace and Chopard, Grammy-winner Carrie Underwood wearing Zuhair Murad and Jonathan Arndt diamond drops , Lee Ann Rhimes in Philosophy and Bleeding Love chanteuse, Leona Lewis in Rhandi Rahm.

But what is a Grammy red carpet without the shenanigans – a.k.a. “The Courtney Love” factor? You just never know what’s going to come at you when musicians on medication dress themselves. This year the big winner is rapper, M.I.A., who busted out with bad roots, a baby bump and a Manish Arora dress that defied explanation.

While the look might not be as shocking as the Lil’ Kim doily episode at the MTV Music Awards (or the Bjork Oscar swan), combine it with the aforementioned Paula Abdul disaster, throw in a dash of trash from Paris, and add the My Favorite Martian choice from Estelle – and we may have us a red carpet catastrophe worthy of a Courtney Love MySpace rant.
