The 2013 Golden Globes red carpet was a mixed bag of sensations, snores and surprises, with everything from a $5.7 million Harry Winston diamond necklace (or scarf as my colleague Mandy Tracy at Jewelry.com aptly called it) to barely there diamond studs to…yes…even a bug!

Here’s the highlight reel for your drooling pleasure (many credits forthcoming). And, as usual, please be sure to weigh in with your favorites of the night!

1. Diamond Necklaces

Shocker! Diamond neckwear stole the show this year with stunning vintage looks from Olivia Munn in Chopard, Jessica Alba in that $5.8 million Harry Winston shocker, Sally Field’s neckwear knockout to host Amy Poehler’s Chopard lariat weighing in at (wait for it…) 83 carats! Ba-ling!

2. Earring Statements

Julianne Hough was my first jewelry sighting of the night – and I was pleasantly surprised to know that her choice in ear candy was a riskier move than her choice to pair up with Ryan Snorecrest. That’s a REAL beetle stud earring and praying mantis ear cuff – both by Daniela Villegas. Win!

Taylor Swift’s Lorraine Schwartz statement earrings won big with the folks who participated in the head-spinning #globejewelry Live Tweet fest.

Just look at all these jaw-droppers tailor-made for looky-loos like us!

3. Diamond Sticks and Studs

Zzzzzzzzzz……… ‘Nuff Said.

4. Julianne’s Bulgari Blowout

Golden Globe-winner Julianne Moore deserves her own section this year, jewelry hounds. As the former spokesmodel for Bulgari and apparently friendly enough with Tom Ford to ask him to design her something by EMAIL (jealous!), well, it just doesn’t get much better than this.

6. Red, Burgundy and Ballet Pink

The A-list continues to turn out in red frocks (and safe jewels). These women are all stunning, but, I’m sorry. I just yearn for more ‘outside the box’ choices every now and again. But…this is a trend report and well, it’s still an Awards Show staple. Wake me when it’s over.

HOWEVER, a refreshing color craze helped to rouse me from my slumber….the blushy hues of ballet pink. Observe…

7. Spotlight Stealer/Meme Alert:

Move over A-Jo…

There’s a new ‘gam’ in town.

I KNOW I’ve missed many other moments worth mentioning. Who wore your favorite frock and jewel combo?

And don’t forget to check in with Jewelry.com later tomorrow, where we’ll attempt to pair some of these jaw-dropping jewelry looks with real-world alternatives. Fun!

Cannes Film Festival jewelry gawking is one of my favorite pasttimes. This event, unlike any other, is where the rich and richer get to bring out their baubles and swing’ em around for all to see. We’ve got princesses, queens, celebrities and model types – all dripping in diamonds for your drooling pleasure.

Who wore your favorite look?

Here is a dynamic diamond duo of (model?)Hofit Golan and Lady Victoria Hervey. If the jewelry world had superheroes, they’d have some serious wonder twin powers.

Chopard Celebrates with the A-List

Jewelry events thrown by luxury design houses are often the best parties for bauble gawking, and no one does it better than Chopard.

Celebrating 150 years of sparkling style and the launch of their couture collection, Animal World (see an earlier post for details), the Swiss watch and jewelry maker threw a soiree last night at Manhattan’s Frick Museum where A-list beauties mingled with high society – all dripping in Chopard diamonds.

Gwyenth Paltrow looked lovely in a long lace Antonio Berrardi gown with Chopard’s fancy shape diamond chandeliers set in platinum (24.2 carats) and a rose cut diamond ring set in platinum (13.3 carats).

Kate Hudson sparkled in a grey Lanvin number with Chopard’s chalcedony, sapphire, diamond and iolite chandeliers, a multicolor pearl (558 carats) and diamond (54 carats) sautoir and south sea pearl, pink and black diamond ring. Stunning.

Christina Ricci worked a vintage Kermit green Galanos gown with Chopard’s fancy shape diamond earrings set in 18kt white gold (33 carats).

And Claire Danes looked lovely in Lanvin with air-shaped diamond chandelier earrings set in platinum (20 carats) and a paraiba tourmaline and diamond bracelet set in 18kt white gold (131 carats).

Finally model, Eugenia Silva, rocked Chopard’s black and white diamond swallow necklace set in 18kt rose gold ( 25 carats) and black and white swallow diamond earrings (13.6 carats) from the 150th Anniversary Collection, Animal World.

Blinded by all the ice? It gets better. The New York Times reported that one lucky socialite had to double up on the diamonds when her husband surprised her by purchasing a ‘ram’-inspired Chopard necklace from the Animal World collection for, oh, a mere $250,000 – so she had to throw it over the $700,000 diamond bib number she was (sigh) already wearing.

I’m going to lose a lot of sleep thinking about her predicament. No, really.

Chopard Celebrates 150 Years

Noah’s Ark never looked this good, jewelry hounds. The luxury watch stalwart and red carpet staple, Chopard, is celebrating their 150th Anniversary with a dazzling array of 150 unique animal-inspired pieces – their largest and most diverse collection devoted to a single theme.

And what a theme it is.

In true Chopard style, the pieces required 20,000 hours of work and involved setting 250,000 stones.

“I really wanted to make them like sculptures,” Chopard co-president and artistic director Caroline Gruosi-Scheufele told WWD of the pieces. “If people want to buy one, they will have to reserve it and get it at the end of November.”

Thankfully, they’ve created a microsite devoted to the effort, where you can gawk at over a dozen of the drool-worthy gems up for grabs.

Here are some of my favs (Check out the whopper of a yellow diamond in the turtle ring. Slow and steady wins this race!):

Monkey pendant in white gold set with brown diamonds (5cts) and tsavorites (5cts), on a white gold chain set with briolette-cut rubellites (16cts).

Turtle ring in rose gold, composed of a magnificent pear-cut yellow diamond (11cts) surrounded by brown diamonds (3cts), cognac-coloured diamonds and yellow diamonds (2cts).

Bear Cub Ring composed of two sapphires (0,1ct), one onyx and diamonds (23,8ct) set in white gold.

Rabbit Bracelet in white gold set with diamonds (7cts), brown diamonds, pear-shaped rose-cut orange sapphires (15cts), oval shaped green tourmalines (4cts) and marquise-cut green tourmalines (2cts).

Sardine Bracelet in white gold set with diamonds (4cts), sapphires (11cts) and sapphire cabochons.

Which one do you want to bring home? Weigh in!
