Reset Your Rings & Jewelry With These Tips

Have you been gifted a piece of jewelry that’s just not your style? Do you own a family heirloom (grandma’s old engagement ring) that’s a little too vintage for your liking? Instead of re-gifting or re-selling your jewelry, why not have your diamond reset. Here are a few things to consider before resetting your jewelry.

Find a reputable jeweler –  Do your research and find a trustworthy jeweler who specializes in resetting. When choosing your jeweler, make sure he or she understands exactly what you are looking for.

Get your diamond graded – It’s never a bad idea to have your diamond graded by a professional such as IGI or GIA. They will supply you with a certificate that will help to identify your diamond when you get it back from the jewelers.

Stones can be reset into different types of jewelry – It’s a common myth that diamonds can only be reset into rings. If rings aren’t your thing, take that pretty diamond of yours and reset it into a new necklace or bracelet.

Be creative – Here’s your chance to get those creative juices flowing and become a jewelry designer for the day. If grandma’s diamond from her old engagement ring was set in white gold and it’s not your metal of choice, why not reset the diamond in some bright yellow gold or trendy rose gold. Some diamonds and gemstones shine just a little more when reset in a different shade of gold.

Legendary Jewerly Thief Doris Payne Strikes Again!

The 84-year-old jewelry thief extraordinaire, Doris Payne fooled us again with her latest steal, a $33,000 engagement ring at David Yurman in Charlotte, North Carolina. Payne has spanned a seasoned, sixty three year career stealing from famous jewelry houses and can count Switzerland, Greece and even Japan as some of her prime hotspots.

DorisPayne_blog_20150724_c_

Born in 1930 in Slab Fork, West Virginia, Payne grew up poor and struggled as a working class mother. Payne’s first score was when she was a child swiping a watch from her local jeweler. Payne quickly worked her way stealing from upscale department stores, major jewelers like Tiffany & Co. and even stole a 10 1/2 ct diamond in Monte Carlo. Totally fascinated? Well, the legendary jewelry thief dubbed ‘Diamond Doris’ was even the subject of a documentary, The Life and Times of Doris Payne.

DorisPayne_blog_20150724_a_

This most recent report comes shortly after her October jail release from last year after stealing a $22,500 diamond encrusted ring at El Paseo Jewelers in Palm Desert, California.

Get In the Know: Learn About Diamond Insurance, Appraisals, & Certificates

As jewelry enthusiasts, we have some major love for diamonds (we know you do too!). We know you value your diamond jewelry, which is why it’s so important to care for your diamonds properly and understand diamond insurance, appraisals, and certificates. Just think, what would you do if your engagement ring chipped or was stolen…!  Get in the know with the below information.

DiamondLegal_blog_20150708_a_

Insurance – Get those diamonds insured! There are several ways to insure your diamonds. If you’re a homeowner, you can purchase an extension on your homeowners’ policy. Another option is through a jewelry retailer who offers insurance, but make sure you do your research and compare plans first! The last way is to insure through a company that specializes in jewelry insurance such as Jewelers Mutual.

Appraisals – All insurers require an appraisal document. This document contains diamond information including a description, the diamond value, sales tax (this may or may not be included), treatment information, inscriptions, and at times other documentation located in an addendum. The value of a diamond is calculated by a number of factors such as the 4 Cs (cut, color, clarity, and carat weight), current retail prices, the metal weight, the origin of the materials, and the craftsmanship and design of the piece.

Certificate – A diamond certificate (cert) is also known as a diamond grading report and proves a diamond exists. A cert includes the carat weight, measurements, grades for the 4 Cs, and additional information such as an image of the diamond showing its inclusions. A cert created by a gem lab is much more accurate than a cert created by an individual involved with the diamond sale.
