The Jewelry Insider

October 4, 2010

Used to be the words ‘jewelry’ and ‘sale’ were the oil and water of the marketing world. The common wisdom was: folks just wouldn’t want to buy discounted diamonds and gems, fearing they were somehow tainted or ‘damaged goods’.

But they were wrong. So wrong.

Unlike a four-carton pile-on at the all-you-can-eat buffet, there is no shame in the jewelry deal. Now, every jewelry outlet – from mall retailers and department stores to mom & pop shops and online e-tailers – offers sales, discounts and the grand-daddy of ’em all: wholesale jewelry.

Enter: JewelClub.

What was once a ‘password-protected’ Friends and Family site for a large fine jewelry manufacturer offering 70-80% off retail (yes, you’re reading that right), is now open to all us huddled masses yearning to bling free.

And in the great Donald Trump “Art of the Deal” tradition – they now have a “Deal of the Day” feature, where they offer one item every 24 hours for an even lower price. Sometimes it’s a colorful cocktail ring. Sometimes it’s gold hoops. Sometimes it’s a bridal piece. Sometimes it’s a brown diamond cat pendant. I could go on…But it’s always worth a look.

I just check their Facebook Page or their homepage for a quick glimpse every morning, and then go about my business.

So frugalistas and jewelry hounds, there’s really no reason to pay retail when it comes to fine jewelry anymore. There are, of course, still reasons to hide our heads in shame (Jersey Shore marathon, anyone?). Luckily – buying fine jewelry at a discount is no longer one of them.

Now go out there and make ‘The Donald’ proud.

Ivanka Trump’s Boardroom Jewelry

Ivanka Trump jewelry has been all over the place lately – from her recent Ivanka Trump Jewelry line launch in New York to her highly covered wedding jewels (see all the diamond details here). But it is her toupeed elder’s show, Celebrity Apprentice, that’s making hearts go pitter pat these days as the uber spawn sports a dazzling array of gems during each episode’s Boardroom showdown.

(Spoiler alert if you DVR-ed the episode!)

While Sinbad was booted off last night, the big event in my book was gawking at Ivanka’s stunning boardroom bib necklace. Marrying two hot trends (yellow gold and statement necklaces), the signature piece stood out like a Cyndi Lauper non-sequitor (Love me some Cyndi, but is she medicated?).

And Ivanka’s art deco-inspired cuff is another great show stopper.

You can shop for these pieces on www.ivankatrumpcollection.com – and look for more Ivanka Trump jewelry style in the weeks to come.

I have to admit, I am duly impressed by the way Trump is handling her celebrity jewelry line. She’s not just lending her name (like every ‘Real Housewife’ under the sun), she is a true CEO – and it shows in the quality of the product and the respect the line gets in the industry.

But can I hate her for having a successful business, good hair, a high powered job, an adorable (and rich) husband and a ginormous trust fund? That seems reasonable.

Ivanka Trump’s Wedding Jewelry Low Down

Ivanka Trump jewelry is all the rage right now – from her stunning cushion-cut diamond engagement ring to her eponymous jewelry line, The Ivanka Trump Collection.

So it comes as no surprise that jewelry mavens like us are darn near apoplectic to find out what kind of diamond bling the lucky bit%@, I mean, lucky bride wore to her wedding this Sunday.

Here are the diamond-filled deets, my hounds:

Ivanka wore three pieces of custom-made platinum and diamond jewels. The first? A platinum mixed-cut diamond hair piece to accent her veil weighing in at 6.38 carats for a mere $45,000.

Next? Tasteful platinum mixed-cut cluster earrings at 9.67 carats and $130,000.

Finally? A truly stunning art deco fancy link diamond and platinum estate bracelet at 26 carats worth $90,000 that went perfectly with her Grace Kelly-inspired Vera Wang gown.

Her bridesmaids were appropriately adorned in Ivanka Trump Collection diamond jewelry to go with their Carolina Herrera gowns (searching for pics, so stay tuned).

Well-heeled New Yorkers from the publishing, real estate, and jewelry worlds rubbed elbows with the likes of Russell Crowe and Natalie Portman. Ivana mingled with The Donald. Regis mingled with Babs Walters. Oh, to be a fly on the wall…

Before heading back to their important careers and fairytale lives, the newlyweds are going to spend some time honeymooning in Africa. Of course.

What do you guys think of the happy couple and the diamond bling? Weigh in! I thought it was tasteful and non-Trump like. Not too over-the-top at all.

And now back to our regularly scheduled lives….

Ivanka Trump’s Engagement Ring Bling

Update 2: Click here for my round up of the actual Ivanka Trump wedding jewelry – tasteful and surprisingly not too Trump-y.

Update 1: Here is a real pic of Ivanka’s stunning engagement ring. At the time of the post, no pics had surfaced. Enjoy, jewelry hounds…

Jewelry is not just Ivanka Trump’s passion – it’s her business. So when the Trump heiress, real estate guru and jewelry magnate gets engaged to another financial phenom, you can bet the rock is going to be something special.

While no photos have surfaced yet of the ring New York Observer owner, Jared Kushner, gave to Ivanka when he popped the question last Wednesday, Women’s Wear Daily is reporting she got a whopping 5 carat cushion-cut stunner in a platinum setting from her own signature ring line.

The young groom-to-be apparently proposed in front of Ivanka’s jewelry colleagues – in case they didn’t already envy the wench.

“Jared and I are very similar in that we’re very ambitious. That’s what makes it so amazing to be in a relationship with someone who is supportive of that,” Trump told New York Magazine. “I’m happy for him when he is in the office working late. I know how good that feels when you sit down and return e-mails.”

ying to convert to Judaism under the tutelage of a rabbi. Awww…..

No wedding date has been set, but you can bet the event will be a Who’s Who of famous New Yorkers, rich real estate types and gravity-defying toupees.

Good thing The Donald has deep pockets!

Jewelry lovers, you have one person to thank for getting Hollywood to break out the bling this weekend. One Mr. Donald Trump. Trump and Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem of Dubai (a.k.a. one of the richest dudes on the planet) threw one humdinger of a soiree in Bel Air to introduce the new Trump International Hotel and Tower in Dubai.

When money talks, people listen. And when money throws a party – you take off the diamond studs and your ‘tasteful’ little gold pendants and bring out the big guns. Oscar darling, Hilary Swank, got the memo and dazzled with a gorgeous Y-neck diamond stunner. We admittedly miss her long locks, but the short do gives the rocks the platform they deserve.

Hayden Panettierre complemented her leopard print mini with a pair of stunning gold drop earrings, and Private Practice star, Kate Walsh, followed suit with some extra-long vintage diamond dazzlers.

The evening’s entertainment, Christina Aguilera, kept it simple with some big diamond hoops, and Trump spawn, Ivanka, wore an even larger version of the same. The apple doesn’t fall far.

You have to hand it to The Donald. He knows how to get people excited about architecture. The Dubai addition to his signature tower collection is one of the most anticipated structures on the luxurious Palm Jumeirah. The 62-story, stainless steel and glass tower will be the tallest building on the man-made island (of course) and should be completed in summer 2011. We’re ready for our invite, Mr. Trump.

There are certain things in life that are better left unsaid. If a woman is looking a bit puffy around the middle, you don’t dare ask her if she’s preggers, right? If your boss has his fly down in the middle of a presentation, better wait until the power point comes to a close before pointing out the obvious. In the land of diamond rings, the unspoken rule is, well, bigger is most definitely better.

Don’t worry, guys. We know you can’t all be “The Donald”, who is rumored to hold the record for buying a rock worth $2 million for current wife, Melania. But let a girl dream, won’t you?

No one knows this better than Czech Republic-based ALO Jewelry, who plans to debut the most expensive jewel ever made in the country during a Prague jewelry fair in October. According to the Prague Daily Monitor, the gold ring will support a diamond worth close to $1 million, and model Petra Nemcova will be the lucky lady to show it off to the gawking public.

“The demand for luxurious jewelery has definitely been on the increase,” says Aloiz Ryšavý, owner of ALO. “Anyone can afford a diamond jewel nowadays,” Ryšavý adds.

Well, maybe not THIS diamond jewel. But I would be happy to, say, guard it for them if they need any special assistance. In the meantime, maybe Melania needs a babysitter…
