Salma and Goldie – amFar’s Diamond Duo

Jaw-dropping diamond jewelry fashion was the belle of the ball at the 2nd Annual amfAR Cinema Against AIDS Dubai Gala this Friday. The event took place at the new Atlantis, The Palm Hotel, which recently opened with an extravagant party rumored to be the most expensive bash the world has ever seen.

It’s no surprise, then, that the celebrities on hand to raise money for AIDS research didn’t feel shy about bringing out the big guns in the bling department. It also didn’t hurt that diamond powerhouse, Cartier, was one of the largest sponsors for the worthy event.

The always-gorgeous Salma Hayek stunned the crowd with both her auctioning skills and a stunning Boucheron statement necklace with a diamond rosette. Laura Linney appeared in a classic metallic gown with diamond dangle earrings that exemplified her ‘less is more’ style. And Goldie Hawn always lights up a room – but her lobster-bib sized diamond necklace with gemstone accents took things to an entirely new level.

Jeffrey Wright, Danny Glover, Harry Belafonte and directors, Oliver Stone and Terry Gilliam, helped the diamond-clad event chairs raise $1.8m for amfAR, auctioning off items that included a stint on the Hayek-produced show Ugly Betty and a one-of-a-kind Cartier diamond cuff with Hayek’s signature.

Salma and Goldie – can they do no wrong? They can act, they can produce, they can auction, they have excellent taste in diamonds – and they have long-term partners who they aren’t getting married to anytime soon. They’re a veritable diamond-clad Thelma and Louise.

Without the ‘driving off a cliff to their doom’ incident…

How do you throw the priciest party the world has ever seen?

Fireworks in DubaiHow do you throw the priciest party the world has ever seen? It’s simple. You build a billion-dollar hotel on a man-made island, invite a slew of celebrities and billionaires, fly in world-renown chefs and designers, and create a fireworks display so huge it can be seen from outer space.

And drop a cool $20 million.

The economic crisis was nowhere to be found in Dubai, as the Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, the Executive Chairman of Nakeel, celebrated the grand opening of his $1.5 billion luxury hotel, Atlantis – The Palm, with a party rumored to be the biggest bash history.

“I’m thrilled and proud,” beamed the Sultan. “Five years ago where I am standing now was water.”

There was enough pomp and security for a royal wedding, as the 2,000 guests had to go through several check points to gain entrance to the soiree. The entire artificial palm-shaped island where the hotel is located was locked down several hours before the festivities began, and a special “exclusion zone” was established along the coastline, which banned boats from coming within two nautical miles of the shore.

Glittering guests brought our their best jewelry fashions, including Lindsay Lohan in a gorgeous diamond and onyx Y-neck with matching drop earrings; uber-model, Agyness Deyn, in a unique diamond statement necklace; and designer, Jade Jagger, in a layered series of pearl strands. And Lily Allen took the prize for the most ice, with a dazzling necklace of interconnected diamond circles.

Other A-list attendees included Denzel Washington, Robert DeNiro, Sir Richard Branson, Sarah Ferguson, Janet Jackson and fashion moppets Mary Kate and Ashley Olson.

The guests were treated to a banquet prepared by several Michelin-rated chefs, a private performance by Kylie Minogue, and an after party at the nearby Royal Afterglow bar, where DJs, including Samantha Ronson, played live sets.

Jewelry lovers, you have one person to thank for getting Hollywood to break out the bling this weekend. One Mr. Donald Trump. Trump and Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem of Dubai (a.k.a. one of the richest dudes on the planet) threw one humdinger of a soiree in Bel Air to introduce the new Trump International Hotel and Tower in Dubai.

When money talks, people listen. And when money throws a party – you take off the diamond studs and your ‘tasteful’ little gold pendants and bring out the big guns. Oscar darling, Hilary Swank, got the memo and dazzled with a gorgeous Y-neck diamond stunner. We admittedly miss her long locks, but the short do gives the rocks the platform they deserve.

Hayden Panettierre complemented her leopard print mini with a pair of stunning gold drop earrings, and Private Practice star, Kate Walsh, followed suit with some extra-long vintage diamond dazzlers.

The evening’s entertainment, Christina Aguilera, kept it simple with some big diamond hoops, and Trump spawn, Ivanka, wore an even larger version of the same. The apple doesn’t fall far.

You have to hand it to The Donald. He knows how to get people excited about architecture. The Dubai addition to his signature tower collection is one of the most anticipated structures on the luxurious Palm Jumeirah. The 62-story, stainless steel and glass tower will be the tallest building on the man-made island (of course) and should be completed in summer 2011. We’re ready for our invite, Mr. Trump.
