3 Jewelry Buying Tips For Men

Gentlemen, are you having trouble finding your special someone something she’ll absolutely love (Mother’s Day is right around the corner!)? We’re firm believers that jewelry always makes a great gift. Take a look at our three jewelry buying tips.

MenBuyingJewelry_blog_20150325_a1_

1) Ask For Help – If asking for help from one of her friends isn’t necessarily your cup of tea, then we have a better idea. Do some snooping (aka “gift researching”)! This is one time when snooping in her jewelry box is okay. Does she own a lot of rings or more necklaces? Does she like colorful gemstone jewelry or is classic black and white more her style?

2) Educate Yourself – If you noticed she has a lot of gold jewelry while “gift researching,” learn a little more about gold jewelry so you can make an educated decision when purchasing. Maybe you want to spice up her jewelry box with some white gold or rose gold. Read about the different types of gold in our blog post “Shades of Gold.”

3) Splurge A Little – Splurging a little on jewelry is totally okay (and we encourage it!). Jewelry is something she can wear forever, and there are some great styles that you can buy for under $100. Check out our $99 Jewelry Sale for some pretty pieces all $99 and under.

Trend alert!
Bib necklaces are a fun and classy jewelry trend to try out this spring and summer. Celebs are accessorizing their red carpet looks with these fashion-forward necklaces. So what exactly is a bib necklace? A bib necklace is a larger piece of jewelry, where a thick section of the necklace sits on the chest, mimicking a baby’s bib. These necklaces were common in 7th century Greek and Roman jewelry (so you know they’re stylish!), and have been used throughout the ages to accessorize evening gowns.

Here are some tips on how to wear a bib necklace.
Bib necklaces are the perfect statement jewelry pieces. Allow them to be the main focus of your look by pairing them with solid colors.
Bib necklaces look great worn overtop of your shirt. For instance: wear a button-up shirt with a bib necklace at the collar. Of course, the beauty of these necklaces is that they can be worn with a number of outfits (check out the celebs rockin’ their necklaces with dresses above!).
Don’t pair your bib necklaces with too much additional jewelry. They should stand out by themselves!

MTV Movie Awards: Jewelry, Fashion, & Beauty Trends

The MTV Movie Awards took place just this past weekend. Didn’t have time to watch? No worries! We’re here to bring you photos and conversation about the awards red-carpet trends. As usual, we scoured the carpet for the brightest and biggest jewels, but we’re also fashion and beauty fiends. Here are three jewelry, fashion, and beauty trends we spotted.

Rihanna at the MTV Music Awards

Earring Bling: Dig out your dangly earrings! This year earrings were plentiful at the MTV Movie Awards. Jessica Alba rocked a pair of long black earrings and a second pair of cross earrings from Graziela Gems. If you’re looking for a similar pair, check out these gorgeous Van Kempen Onyx stunners. We’re sure you’ll love them!

Wavy Beach Hair: Look’s like even the celebs are ready for the summer (aren’t we all?). Ellie Goulding showed up to the awards sporting some casual golden locks that we can never seem to pull off ourselves. She went for a classic look with simple Finn earrings, Lynn Bann bracelets and ring, and a Penny Preville ring. Here’s a triple bangle bracelet like Ellie’s.

Solid Colors Accessorized: While there were a number of floral looks at the awards, several celebs opted for solid colors, and accessorized their outfits with jewels. Nicki Minaj accented her skin-tight black dress with some Alexander McQueen gold jewelry, including several armbands, which are hot items for the spring and summer. A Midwest metal dealer purchased a rare gold Faberge egg worth $33 million at an antiques mart. Yes you read that right – the egg is worth $33 million. It gets even better, the metal dealer meant to melt down the egg for scrap!

Luckily, he googled the words “egg” and “Vacheron Constantin,” and found an article on surviving Faberge eggs that quoted Kieran McCarthy, Director of London antique dealer Wartski, and showed a photo of his egg. Google knows all!

McCarthy commented, “[The egg] contained a Vacheron Constantin watch, so [the metal dealer] figured he could sell it slightly above market value.” Purchased from the antique mart for $14,000 he was planning on selling it for $15,000.

McCarthy traveled to the man’s home where he found the egg in the kitchen next to a cupcake (where else?). When he told the metal dealer what he had discovered and he dropped to the floor. That would probably be our first reaction as well, and then of course we would begin drafting a list of future purchases, diamond jewelryobviously included.

Wondering just why this egg is so important and worth $33 mil? It is one of the lost Imperial Eggs designed by Carl Faberge. There are 50 imperial eggs in total. The location of 42 eggs is known, but eight are missing. Five are thought to be destroyed, but there are three out there in the world somewhere, well now two (we wouldn’t mind finding one in our Easter basket).

It’s reported the egg has been sold for $33 million to a private collector, although the exact total can’t be confirmed. The collector is allowing the egg to be displayed at Wartski in London from April 14 to April 17, so check it out if you’re in London!

If we could, we would definitely head over to the Wartskiand memorize every detail of that egg. We’re thinking “egg hunt” if you know what we mean…

We all know gold fillings and glittering grills are status symbols famous hip-hop stars and wannabes use to put the Midas Touch on their teeth. But a recent study uncovered evidence that wealthy hip-hoppers aren’t the only ones who like to decorate their dentures.

According to National Geographic, sophisticated dentistry allowed Native Americans to add bling to their teeth as far back as 2,500 years ago.

An analysis of thousands of teeth examined from the collection in Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History revealed that ancient peoples had semiprecious gems soldered on to their teeth as a pure form of decoration.

While the origins of the samples are not known for sure, it’s clear that people – mostly men – from nearly all walks of life opted for the look, noted Jose Concepcion Jimenez, an anthropologist at the institute.

The ornamental gemstones (including jade) were attached with an adhesive made out of natural resins, such as plant sap, which was mixed with other chemicals and crushed bones, Jiminez said. He added that the dentists likely had a sophisticated knowledge of tooth anatomy. For example, they knew how to drill into teeth without hitting the pulp inside, he explained. Lucky for them.

Today, the art of tooth decoration is still alive and well – and not just on the likes of Lil Wayne or 50 Cent. Some folks opt to have gold, diamonds, birthstones and more bonded to their teeth as more dentists offer the service as a way to distinguish themselves in a crowded market.

And if you decide that bling on your bicuspids is getting in the way of say, chewing or speaking clearly? The decoration can be easily removed without causing any damage. Lucky for us.

Famous UK chocolate-maker, Cadbury, is on a golden mission: they’re scheming to convince the folks at Guinness Book to name their famous Wispa Gold chocolate bar as the most expensive in the world.

Must be a slow news month in candy land.

The Wispa Gold, discontinued in 2003, is a chocolate bar wrapped in edible gold leaf and sheathed in a gold leaf wrapper. Priced at $1628 each, the new batch of bars will be delivered to the record keepers by none other than Tony Hadley, the singer from Spandau Ballet whose biggest hit was “Gold” back in the day.

I personally would have picked a gold medalist, but I guess Spandau Ballet still pulls weight across the pond. (???)

The original Wispa was released on the UK market in 1981 and quickly became one of Britain’s most treasured Icons. One story tells of an un-named arab who imported batches of the bars to his home in Saudi Arabia for around $4,000 a day.

A Facebook Group is stoking public interest in the campaign and there are a surprising number of folks who miss the gold chocolate option for their pantries – even at such a high pricetag. The limited batch will be made available on September 14th.
