The 2013 Golden Globes red carpet was a mixed bag of sensations, snores and surprises, with everything from a $5.7 million Harry Winston diamond necklace (or scarf as my colleague Mandy Tracy at Jewelry.com aptly called it) to barely there diamond studs to…yes…even a bug!

Here’s the highlight reel for your drooling pleasure (many credits forthcoming). And, as usual, please be sure to weigh in with your favorites of the night!

1. Diamond Necklaces

Shocker! Diamond neckwear stole the show this year with stunning vintage looks from Olivia Munn in Chopard, Jessica Alba in that $5.8 million Harry Winston shocker, Sally Field’s neckwear knockout to host Amy Poehler’s Chopard lariat weighing in at (wait for it…) 83 carats! Ba-ling!

2. Earring Statements

Julianne Hough was my first jewelry sighting of the night – and I was pleasantly surprised to know that her choice in ear candy was a riskier move than her choice to pair up with Ryan Snorecrest. That’s a REAL beetle stud earring and praying mantis ear cuff – both by Daniela Villegas. Win!

Taylor Swift’s Lorraine Schwartz statement earrings won big with the folks who participated in the head-spinning #globejewelry Live Tweet fest.

Just look at all these jaw-droppers tailor-made for looky-loos like us!

3. Diamond Sticks and Studs

Zzzzzzzzzz……… ‘Nuff Said.

4. Julianne’s Bulgari Blowout

Golden Globe-winner Julianne Moore deserves her own section this year, jewelry hounds. As the former spokesmodel for Bulgari and apparently friendly enough with Tom Ford to ask him to design her something by EMAIL (jealous!), well, it just doesn’t get much better than this.

6. Red, Burgundy and Ballet Pink

The A-list continues to turn out in red frocks (and safe jewels). These women are all stunning, but, I’m sorry. I just yearn for more ‘outside the box’ choices every now and again. But…this is a trend report and well, it’s still an Awards Show staple. Wake me when it’s over.

HOWEVER, a refreshing color craze helped to rouse me from my slumber….the blushy hues of ballet pink. Observe…

7. Spotlight Stealer/Meme Alert:

Move over A-Jo…

There’s a new ‘gam’ in town.

I KNOW I’ve missed many other moments worth mentioning. Who wore your favorite frock and jewel combo?

And don’t forget to check in with Jewelry.com later tomorrow, where we’ll attempt to pair some of these jaw-dropping jewelry looks with real-world alternatives. Fun!

Jewelry Sparkles at Dior and Bulgari Bashes

When two of the most celebrity-friendly fashion houses celebrate themselves, they usually have plenty of A-list wattage on-hand to turn up the star power.

Case in point? The Dior Store re-opening in New York City last night, that featured the likes of Amy Adams and Natalie Portman in black and white with minimal sparkle and Liv Tyler in a feathery frock with a funky statement necklace.

The 57th Street flagship store was closed for the past five months for a complete makeover, WWD reports. Architect Peter Marino aimed to bring the spirit of the Parisian flagship on Avenue Montaigne to New York with a look inspired by the residential feel of a Paris hotel.

The jewelry jaw-drop award, though, had to be the chunky emerald earrings worn by Wendi Murdoch (yup, wife of Rupert). With a household income like theirs, you can bet your assets those puppies are real. Wow.

Alas, my favorite Dior girl, Charlize Theron, was nowhere to be found. Maybe because Natalie Portman is the new face for their new perfume, Miss Dior Cherie? Hmmm…

Across the pond in Paris, the venerable Italian jewelry house, Bulgari, continued to celebrate their 125th year with the opening of ‘125 Years of Italian Magnificence Bulgari au Grand Palais.’

On display until mid January will be some 600 shiny baubles, including famous jewelry worn by the biggest movie stars of the century, including the stunning diamond and emerald brooch Elizabeth Taylor wore at her first wedding to Richard Burton, alongside sparklers worn by style icons Sophia Loren and Grace Kelly.

Bulgari’s A-list spokesmodel, Julianne Moore, was there to celebrate in what appear to be peacock-inspired gemstone earrings, along with celebs Juliette Binoche, Lenny Kravitz and Clive Owen.

Dear, Santa: All I want for Christmas is a jewelry spokesmodel contract. Love, Laura

Julianne Moore: Bvlgari’s Blingy Beauty

When Julianne Moore bared all for the Bvlgari Serpenti campaign last year, I was – shall we say – skeptical about her choice to add ‘jewelry spokesmodel’ to her resume. Why does a serious, successful actress need to get naked to peddle high-end jewelry?

The answer, of course, was – she gets to peddle (aka wear and probably OWN) some of the most beautiful baubles on the block. And since they’ve always got her in her birthday suit (what better way to wear 50+ carat emerald earrings?), she’s certainly reminding Hollywood that she’s still viable leading lady material.

So I’m over my concern. Ms. Moore knows EXACTLY what she’s doing. Even though the city of Venice banned her lion-laden campaign ads for being to ‘lewd’. (Italians? Not appreciating nudity? What gives?)

Just look at the jewelry she gets to wear – like this latest entry from Bvlgari’s recent ‘Save The Children’ event in Rome earlier this week.

The emerald earring choice just keep on giving…

What do you think of Ms. Moore’s new career as the jewelry world’s lucky leading lady? Sell-out or smart cookie?

If the Awards Season red carpet is any indication, teardrop-shaped jewelry is a big trend for 2010. From the AMAs to the Golden Globes, Hollywood divas and the stylists who stalk them are choosing the teardrop earring, in particular, to make a statement.

Teardrop-cut stones are a great way to get a big look for less, and Jewelry.com’s retail partner, Sears, has several great styles I found that fit both the fashion bill and your budget.

These sterling silver, CZ show-stoppers are priced to bring tears to your eyes at only $59.99. Perfect for formal wear or even jazzing up the proverbial little black dress.

Courtney Cox caused jaws to drop with her black sapphire teardrop Golden Globe earrings, and these smokey topaz/brown diamond danglers give the same look for a lot less.

And how cool is this teardrop necklace made from Champagne crystals and marcasite? Even cooler? The price – at only $89.99. Way to go, Sears!

There’s no more tears, jewelry hounds, with options like these!

2010 Golden Globes Jewelry Roundup

The rain couldn’t drown out the dazzling jewelry fashion at the 2010 Golden Globes tonight, and while the red carpet started off slow with lots of stars who opted for little or no jewelry – the showstoppers arrived just in time to save this jewelry hound from hyperventilating.

If 2009 Golden Globe jewelry was about the statement necklace, 2010 was all about the statement earring. Tassels, topaz, and tear-drops were big winners with Julianne Moore in emerald Bulgari beauties, Lea Michele in more emerald teardrops, Courtney Cox in black sapphires designed by Ofira Schwartz. Stunning!

and Kate Hudson and Meryl Streep in tassled elegance, among MANY other earring showstoppers.

Despite rumors to the contrary (and the Julianne Moore emerald forest), diamond jewelry won big over color this year with stunners like Sandra Bullock and Jennifer Garner in diamond danglers…

Chloe Sevigny and Tina Fey in diamond cluster earrings;

Penelope Cruz and Maggie Gylenhaal in simple diamond drops;

and Drew Barrymore in icy Lorraine Schwartz diamond studs (and one whopper of a moonstone statement ring – not pictured).

Icy cuffs complimented just about every look with the necklace a veritable no-show compared to years’ past.

The boring-in-black awards go to Amy Adams in a jewelry-less snoresville ensemble and A-list queens, Jennifer Aniston and Julia Roberts – who seem to have an allergy to color on the red carpet these days. Step it up, sisters. We need you!

And the less-is-more award this year has to go to one Mariah Carey, who thankfully didn’t have to speak this time around but brought out more cleavage and diamond overload than a Dolly Parton convention. Yikes.

What do you guys think of the Golden Globe jewelry extravaganza? Are Julianne’s jewels fab or funky? Julia’s statement necklace – cool or clunky? Weigh in!

January 17, 2010

Update: I was able to confirm that yes, indeed, these are the very same emerald earrings Julianne Moore wears in the Bulgari campaign. All $3 million dollars worth! Holy jaw drop!

Well, jewelry hounds – we have another emerald earring red carpet jaw-dropper. Julianne Moore just showed on the 2010 Golden Globe red carpet with (what I assume) are the Bulgari emerald earrings she wears in their latest campaign. And, as I expected, they are even MORE magnificent than Angelina Jolie’s emerald earring stunners at the Oscars last year – if that’s possible.

These Bulgari masterpieces are 115 carats (!) of pure Colombian emerald bliss, folks. I die!

Stay tuned for more Golden Globe coverage…the A-listers are still on their way!

December 23, 2009

Like Charlize Theron for Dior, Julianne Moore is entering the luxury lexicon of jewelry spokesmodel-dom, appearing in famous watch and jewelry brand, Bvlgari’s, latest campaign peddling their ‘Serpenti’ line, among other styles.

Almost as jaw-dropping as her nude photo shoot is the pair of Colombian pear-shaped emerald earrings she’ll wear, weighing 52.86 and 62.32 carats each. The stunning emeralds were part of Bvlgari’s first retrospective exhibition at Il Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome earlier in the year.

Dare I say that they rival Angelina’s emerald Oscar earrings from Lorraine Schwartz? I’m just saying…

The Serpenti collection is designed around snakes and scale shapes – a slithering genre that’s trending big for 2010 (including Brangelina’s line for Asprey). Bvlgari touts the new collection as a return to the design aesthetic that made the brand famous to begin with, with the A-lister ads (called “Eccentric Charisma”) set to debut in February.

Does Julianne Moore’s tasteful nudity and amazing emeralds make Bvlgari more attractive? I’ve always admired her talent, but have never taken her for the ‘spokesmodel’ type – so it’s a surprise they would choose her out of all the other ‘sell-outs’, I mean, serious actresses out there.

What do you guys think?
