2011 Oscar Jewelry: Afterthoughts and After Parties

Heidi Klum in Lorraine Schwartz jewelry and Julien McDonald gown

Who can’t get enough Oscar night jewelry gawking? Need a cure for your haute couture hangover? That’s what I thought, you diamond-starved looky-loos!

The day after the Oscar jewelry bling-fest always brings with it the realization that A: I missed a few important jewels in my Oscar Night jewelry roundup and B: the after parties are where the real bauble action is (where goes Joan Collins so goes the carat count).
Elton John in Chopard

So here are a few key jewelry after thoughts from the red carpet proper that I didn’t inlcude in my Oscar Top Ten list last night – and a host of great celebrity jewelry looks from the Vanity Fair party and Elton John’s Chopard-hosted viewing soiree.

AFTER THOUGHTS:

Scarlett Johansson Oscar Jewelry – Loved this statement ring on Scarlett Johansson – an haute couture creation by Anna Hu.

Celine Dion Oscar Jewelry – Love it or hate it, this statement piece from Bulgari made jaws drop in horror and/or amazement.

Cate Blanchett Oscar Jewelry

This lavendar and canary yellow Givenchy number had couture queens crowing and others scratching their heads. I (for one) loved it and couldn’t believe she could find jewelry to make the look even better (these yellow diamond earrings are from Van Cleef & Arpels).

VANITY FAIR OSCAR PARTY

What almost upstaged the jewelry gawking at the Vanity Fair Party? The coming out ofThe Biebs and Selena Gomez as an official Hollywood couple! Awwww… Aren’t they cute?

From Charlize Theron and Anna Paquin to Taylor Swift and Jessica Biel, the A-list came to Graydon Carter’s sandbox in stunning, shimmering jewels.

And Rita Wilson? Less is more, sister.

February 14, 2011

While the whole “Lady Gaga arriving in a big egg” stunt felt a little (um) tired to me, the jewelry fashion was refreshingly fun at the 2011 Grammy Awards, with huge earrings, creative cuffs, statement rings, yellow gold and menfolk in layered looks ruling the night in the trend department.

Here are a few highlights to get the jewelry juices flowing…

I FINALLY had a 2011 lower-jaw-drop moment when I spotted this crazy cuff on Glee diva, Lea Michele. It’s by red carpet staple, Lorraine Schwartz, who is also responsible for my second favorite look of the night:

this yellow gold and diamond serpent cuff on Kim Kardashian.Yay!

I also have to applaud Miley Cyrus and Ciara for the winning the “More Is More” award. Maybe it’s because I’ve been so starved for over-the-top jewelry looks this year, but I was happy to see this much sparkle on these young stars.

Big earring looks dusted the sparkling shoulders of everyone from Cyndi Lauper to Snooki:

And as for the fellas? The usual suspects disappointed (Lil Wayne, Diddy) but Seal, Lenny Kravitz and Adam Lambert all rocked the layered necklace look that won the approval of the Twitter Crew (click here to review our fun-filled chat).

With so many folks getting in touch with their inner wacky (Gwenyth? What are you smoking, sister?) I’m sure the Oscars are going to feel like a quaint evening sipping tea by comparison. But I’m ready. Mercedes Benz Fashion Week is a jewelry wasteland so far…. And I’m starving for more!

Jewelry hounds? We’re entering high season for bauble gawking – with Mercedes Benz Fashion Week well under way, The Grammy Awards airing this Sunday and the Oscars right around the corner on February 27th.

Big, deep, breath….

But don’t you fret! I’m doing a ton of eye calisthenics, so I can spot all the hot red carpet jewelry looks for your drooling pleasure. It’s a rough job, but, well….

In the meantime, here are a few of my Grammy jewelry predictions for 2011. Will I be as right as I was for the Golden Globes (yeah, I said it!)? Will Lady Gaga bring it or bore us? Will Barbara Streisand ditch the mumu for Miu Miu? You be the judge.

Join me and all the other jewelry cool kids for our usual red carpet Twitter Fest starting at 6pm EST. Use hashtag: #grammyjewelry and be sure to weigh in with all your rants and raves! Or just circle back right here for my Monday Morning recap of all the gems worth a good gawk.

1. Black Diamond Blow Out:

Rock-and-rollers bring out the black like tweens at a Twilight convention. With Christina Aguilera set to perform, I’m gonna bet she puts on some of her favorite Stephen Webster black diamond sparklers – with the rest of the world going with Loree Rodkin rocks.

2. Creative Cuffs:

This is the “softball over home plate” prediction, I know. But instead of a classic diamond cuff like we’ve seen on Golden Globe and SAG red carpets, I’m guessing the Grammy set is going to spike things up a bit.

3. Boy Bling:

We’ve got some serious Ice Kings walking the carpet this year, with Jay-Z, Usher, Adam Lambert and (of course) Justin Bieber lighting the way. But the question of the night is: Will Kanye West make an appearance? I’ve got to get a closer look at those crazy diamond dentures.

4. Lady Gaga Gets Serious:

Remember when Madonna entered her Evita period? She pulled back the hair, took off the Gauliter cone bras, put on the pants suits… I’m thinking Lady Gaga is going to follow in her footsteps (because I’m the first person who’s ever had THAT idea).

Gone are the Armani satellite dresses and McQueen reptile shoes. Meat dresses are so 2010. My money is on a Lady Gaga who is channeling her inner Chanel. If I’m wrong, I’ll chug an entire glass of champagne. Twist my arm.

Any thoughts you’d like to share before the Grammy games begin? Weigh in!

2011 People’s Choice Awards: Red Carpet Jewelry Roundup

Fasten your leverbacks, jewelry hounds. Awards Season is upon us! Last night’s People’s Choice Awards kicked off what is sure to be a sparkle-filled season of A-list gems and gowns – and the ‘less is more’ trend everyone has been squawking about was – indeed- on display.

With metallic minis ruling the fashion landscape last night, jewelry style stayed on the down low – with lots of metal looks making an appearance instead of huge doses of diamond bling. Nude pumps and naked necklines are also trending big, with simple earring style ruling the red carpet on stars like Taylor Swift (in Amrapali) and Selena Gomez.

My best bejeweled look of the night has to go to the lovely Lucy Hale in a burnt orange mini from Ronal Abdala and a diamond ensemble also from Amrapali in 14kt Gold. Loving the color combo in a “Michelle Williams Oscar” kind of way.

And the worst? Sorry, but Natalie Portman’s tiered purple Jason Wu does nothing to flatter the burgeoning baby bump – despite her sparkly Solange Azagury-Partridge mirror ball earrings.

Finally, Jennifer Aniston? I’m still just not that into your pants-suit/layered gold chain look from 2002. Bless you, but you gotta mix it up, sister.

Here are some more of my selects from last night. Any favorites? Nothing really knocked my socks off.

December 6, 2010

The 2010 Kennedy Center Honors were handed out this weekend to the likes of Oprah Winfrey, Sir Paul McCartney, Merle Haggard, Bill T. Jones and Jerry Herman. And the red carpet was littered with a tony crowd of well-wishers that included a wide range of jewelry choices.

Let’s start with THE DIVAS:

The woman who put the D in Diva was on hand to upstage anyone who deigned make an entrance grander.

Diana Ross.

Floor-length mink? Check. Diamond jewelry overload? Check. Silver sequins? Check. The only thing missing was a wind machine and a Central Park downpour to make this moment shine brighter.

But no one outshines…. The Oprah.

Wearing a cleavage-bearing white dress shirt/gown combo, the O beamed in diamond teardrop earrings as she was honored (and roasted) by the likes of Chris Rock and President Obama, among others.

THE DANGLERS:

Shoulder duster earrings are making a comeback, with Holly Robinson Peete and Gayle King sporting the trend to perfection.

THE DOMINO EFFECT:

Black and white diamonds are a seasonal favorite, and Sugarland’s Jennifer Nettles along with a surprisingly svelte Jennifer Hudson sparkled in subtle black/white earring choices like these beauties for only $166.

THE DO-OVER:

Who doesn’t love Mary Louise Parker? I just don’t love the bed-head hair, awkward red carpet pose and too-tired statement neck/long black gown combo. Check, please.

Thoughts, jewelry hounds?

Oh, and the Kennedy Center Honors ceremony (which ALWAYS makes me cry) airs on CBS on December 28th.

“Unstoppable” Jewelry: Glam, Gauche & Gawdawful

Red carpet jewelry hunting season is in full swing, and last night’s Unstoppable premiere in Los Angeles brought out some A-list lovelinesss and some D-list dregs.

The Glam:

Rosario Dawson’s dusty blue Stella McCartney gown was a hands-down winner, and her Vhernier jewelry added just the right amount of sparkle. Loving the shoulder-duster earrings -a trend I think we’ll see a lot more of in the months to come. (See why here).

The Gauche:

Why was Real Housewife of Orange County, Gretchen Rossi, at the Unstoppable premiere? Perhaps the better question is: What was she thinking when she put on that outfit? Nevermind. I don’t want to know.

Look, the statement necklace could have rocked – but the lace bustier and piled on gems pushed the look to the wrong side of ‘street walker chic’ in my humble opinion.  Sorry.

The Gaudy:

Bless her, Cloris Leachman is having as huge a heydey as Betty White. And she’s just as saucy – so leopard and layers are working for her in a Mrs. Roper kind of way (look her up, youngsters).

Can I just say, though, that I’m kinda tired of the over-the-top octogenarian fashion statement? These women look great for their age. Being funny doesn’t mean you have to ‘dress funny’. You know?

Here are some other shots from the carpet. Anything strike you?

Diamonds Sparkle at 41st NAACP Awards

The 41st NAACP awards at the Shrine last Friday brought out a good many of Oscar’s hopefuls and a bevy of beauties who opted for over-the-top jewelry looks instead of understated elegance. Is this a harbinger of Oscar opulence on the carpet this year? Or just an excuse to get out the gaudy? You be the judge.

Escaping the gauche fest was the evening’s host, Anika Noni Rose, who sported a subdued pair of diamond teardrop earrings to bedazzle her cream Ysa Makino mermaid frock. Classic. Love it.

(Click here to grab a similar pair on Jewelry.com).

Joining Miss Anika in the winner’s circle was Best Supporting Actress shoe-in, Mo’nique, who sported simple Swarovski jewels with her winter white Tadashi Shoji number.

And while I am always a fan of making a jewelry statement on the carpet, these choices left me longing for simpler times. What do you guys think? Is it possible maternity leave made me ‘more’ hardened? Or maybe I’m just sharpening my quills for Sunday’s Oscar blitz…

SAG Jewelry Hits and Misses

The 2010 Screen Actors Guild Awards shined a light on some unique red carpet jewelry choices for a change – some stunning, some, well, notsomuch.

The winners in my book were Diane Kruger (see my earlier post for more), Kate Hudson in over $1 million of Cartier diamonds

Marion Cotillard in over $1 million of Chopard in her hair alone (!), Christina Hendricks in another teardrop triumph (by Irit), and a glowing Christina Applegate in Lorraine Schwartz diamonds – including this unique diamond hair piece. Love it.

I’m on the fence about Meryl – like the emeralds and the Balenciaga print but am not sure it was appropriate for the occasion. I’m also not sure about Sandra Bullock’s Alexander McQueen choice: is it cool or a little too ‘Golden Girls go to the buffet’? Same with Drew Barrymore’s navy get up, simple gold earrings and bedhead hair. Something’s just off here.

Speaking of off – Joan Allen? Bless your heart, but what on EARTH were you thinking with this necklace choice? The former queen of red carpet class just jumped the shark with this ensemble – quite possibly the worst jewelry look I have covered to date. Yikes.

The disappointment continued with Vera Farmiga’s unfortunate gown choice coupled with a powder blue eyeshadow look I haven’t seen since the pre-teens wore it in the 80s.

And the always reliably tacky Patricia Arquette didn’t disappoint with this ‘Mae West meets Priscilla Queen of the Desert’ interpretation. ALL Sequins? WITH gold chandeliers? Really?

As usual, I MUST know what you hounds think, so weigh in. And if the spirit moves you, check out the Jewelry.com Fashion News for more SAG jewelry buzz and their Facebook Page for a complete look at the SAG divas on display.

The Tony Awards were full of surprises last night, not the least of which was Bret Michaels’ near-death run-in with a descending set piece during the opening number. Oh, Bret…

But my favorite part of the night was gawking at the red carpet jewels. From diamonds and gemstones to silver and gold – all categories were present and accounted for.

What’s your favorite Tony jewelry statement? Is it classic Anne Hathaway in diamond clusters? A sultry Gina Gershon in vintage Fred Leighton? Or maybe you’re partial to glam rock chic? Weigh in with your vote in the poll at the right, jewelry hounds!

And I couldn’t resist putting the Bret Michaels moment from YouTube here for your viewing pleasure. Not to worry. He isn’t seriously injured, but as the quick-witted host, Neil Patrick Harris, wisely cracked:

“He’s given a whole new meaning to head banger”

Just got through some early pics of the MTV Movie Awards red carpet. Noticing lots of blue gems, including a cool sapphrie snake ring on Ashley Tisdale and a smokin’ cocktail ring on Malin Ackerman. But love her or hate her, I gotta hand it to Spencer-sib and Hills pseudo star, Stephanie Pratt. Her diamond swirl statement necklace is working for me. Right?

More to come. Including Miley Cyrus in a dress even Angelina Jolie would yawn at, and old schoolers, Cameron Diaz and Sandra Bullock showing the youngsters how it’s done!
