Celebrities ‘Ring’ In the New Year

From Reese Witherspoon to Vivica Fox – celebs were the lucky recipients of some rockin’ rings this holiday season. Here is a run down of some of the best and brightest celebrity rings making news this week – each representing emerging trends in the ring category for 2011.

1. Legally Blonde Gets Luxury Bling

Reese Witherspoon is getting a second chance at love – and a news-worthy diamond engagement ring to seal the deal. Reese’s rock is special not so much for the size (4-carats isn’t HUGE by Hollywood’s standards) but for the quality and cut of the stone.

Fiance and Hollywood Agent, Jim Toth, designed the ring using an Ashoka-cut center stone – a special 62-facet cut that only 10% of rough diamonds mined can support. Cushions and Ascchers ‘made the cut’ most often in 2010, so look for this special shape to surge in the months to come. (Jewelry.com has more on the Ashoka cut here).

2. LeeAnn Rimes Gets Personal

LeeAnn Rimes’s engagement to Eddie Cibrian is no longer notable for the scandalous way these two found love – but for the stunning 5-carat custom-made engagement ring that now makes them legit. The ring also features single cut pave diamonds and tiny rose cut diamonds set in rose gold fleur-de-lis that are connected to the band.

Jeweler Brent Polacheck, who crafted the ring for his childhood friend Cibrian, tells PEOPLE:

“Le[Ann]‘s participation in the design was solely regarding the Fleur de Lis. She had her heart set on having that incorporated in the ring. Other than that, Eddie and I sat down multiple times and worked on the rest of the details.”

The New York Times reported this ‘personalization’ trend is going to continue to surge when it comes to ring finger bling design. I love it.

3. Vivica Fox’s Cougar Catch

News just broke that 46-year-old Vivica Fox got engaged to 27-year-old club promoter, Omar ‘Slim’ White over the holidays with a whopping 8-carat diamond rock worth an estimated $150,000.

A source told People that Fox, 46, “is over the moon – so excited, so in love” with White, who wants to have children.

Fox was so excited that she Tweeted a video of her sparkler for all the fans – a great way for all of us to share our good fortune, right? Diamonds (and social media) are a girl’s best friend for 2011.

3. Christina Aguilera’s Boyfriend Bling

Not everyone brought home rings that mean ‘we’re in it for the long haul’ this holiday. Recently divorced Christina Aguilera reportedly got a ring from her new boyfriend, Matt Rutler, to simply celebrate her 30th birthday (December 18th).

I haven’t been able to find any more details about the design, but this does get me thinking: Is the ‘boyfriend ring’ or ‘birthday ring’ a possible new trend?

Usually rings given from boyfriends to girlfriends bring with them an expectation of commitment. But I wonder if it could also just mean ‘Here’s a ring. It looks cool. No expectations.”?

Reese Witherspoon has been globe trotting this month promoting her latest film, Monsters vs. Aliens, in understated jewelry looks that accentuate her girl-next-door glamour.

Whether its basic black and a pair of diamond studs or earl grey and barely there pearl earrings, this celebrity supermom is fast becoming the poster child for classic Hollywood glamour.

This weekend brought Reese back home to Los Angeles, where she wowed the crowd with a non-traditional Rodarte metallic mini that required minimal bling.

And what do her two kids think about their animation star-mom?

“They are rabid, and they wake up in the morning like, ‘When can we see this movie? When is this movie going to come out?'” she told reporters. “My daughter goes, ‘Just how many people can I bring to the screening? I invited the entire third grade!'”

And just when you thought Reese’s fairy-tale life couldn’t get any dreamier? A-list boyfriend, Jake Gyllenahaal, threw her a 33rd birthday party at his house this weekend after the premiere, inviting sister Maggie and her hubbie Peter Sarsgaard and Robert Downey Jr. and his wife Susan, among others.

“I’m looking forward to my birthday,” Witherspoon recently told reporters at a press conference for her upcoming film. “I think it is a great thing, to be able to be doing things with my kids and having them be proud of me. It’s like, what’s better than feeling you’ve accomplished things in life?”

And to look good doing it? Priceless.

Last night’s Queen Latifah-hosted People’s Choice Awards kicked awards season off in style, as the red carpet at LA’s Shrine Auditorium positively glittered with stars, frocks and new jewelry looks for our drooling pleasure.

Maybe it’s the economy or maybe it’s the event itself, which celebrates the power of the huddled masses yearning to breathe free, but it looks like we’re seeing an end to the bigger, bolder statement trend and the beginning of a more, shall we say, subtle era. In other words, the celebs kept the ice quotient to a minimum last night – perhaps to keep us in their good graces? And it worked. For the most part.

The World Gold Council recently reported that gold jewelry is seeing an upturn in sales even in these tough economic times, and the stylists proved their point last night. Fashion icon, Debra Messing, glowed in a sculptural Donna Karan number and H.Stern’s new Hera earrings in 18K gold. House star Jennifer Morrison honored the metallic trend with a Gianfranco Frere dress and H.Stern’s Zephyr earrings in 18K Noble gold; and Jewel, Chandra Wilson, Jordin Sparks and Olivia Wilde rocked their own subtle yellow gold looks.

While there were some signs of the statement trend hanging in there, like Marissa Tomei’s stunning teardrop necklace and Kate Hudson’s oversized earrings and Jack Vartanian black and white cocktail rings, most celebs opted for understated diamond looks instead.

Dancing With the Stars host, Samantha Harris, is usually dripping in diamonds, but this time she dazzled in small chain-link diamond earrings. A nice touch. Our favorite 90210-er, Jenny Garth, wore a tasteful little boring, I mean, black dress, as did fellow blonde Reese Witherspoon – yet thankfully each of them sprinkled right hand rings and simple diamond earring styles to take things up a notch.

The most unfortunate misstep of the evening did not go to Kathryn Heigl for the pants suit (I’ll let it pass for the Populist Choice awards), but rather to Malin Ackerman, whose sculptural, chunky accessories did nothing to make the unfortunate frock choice any less ‘wrong’.

My favorite jewelry fashion star last night, though, had to be Samantha Who?’s Christina Applegate. Again. The A-line Jenny Packham gown sparkled with just enough crystals, and her matching vintage diamond cuff was the right amount of bling to remind us that she’s a star. Who doesn’t love this woman is the question? Bravo!

With the Critics Choice Awards tonight on VH1 and the Golden Globes this Sunday, the jewelry hound brigade is in for a long magic red carpet ride right up to the Inauguration – where all fashion hell will surely break loose.

What will the Divine Mrs. Obama wear for gosh sakes already? Diamonds and de la Renta? Gemstones and Gucci? A pearl strand from J. Crew and a pants suit (god forbid)? I can’t wait!

Reese Witherspoon lived up to her golden girl image on the red carpet at her Four Christmases premiere in Los Angles yesterday. Gold drop earrings and a dazzling gold dagger statement necklace were the perfect accents to her Nina Ricci LBD and gladiator pumps. The only thing missing was her leading man, Vince Vaughn, who was in Bora Bora shooting another movie.

Four Christmases tells the story of couple who is forced to visit all four sets of parents over the Christmas holidays – an event they have blissfully managed to avoid until now. And it looks like they have good reason.

Hollywood is buzzing with anticipation for this holiday film, which co-stars a slew of Hollywood’s A listers such as Robert Duvall, Sissy Spacek and Jon Voight. If the laugh-out-loud trailer is any indication, audiences will be rolling in the aisles well into the holiday season.

Back to the red carpet…

A glowing Kristen Chenowith, who plays sister to Reese in the film, looked lovely in a Georges Chakra gown and gemstone cluster earrings. And Mary Steenbergen, who plays their mother, wore a stunning pair of gold and diamond drop earrings. Gold hoop earrings glittered on dancer with the stars, Karina Smirnoff, and new mom, Minnie Driver, kept things simple with a gold locket necklace and gold stick earrings.

I’d like to give a special note of congratulations to the original writers of Four Christmases, Matt Allen and Caleb Wilson, who were two of my closet buddies during our college days (we won’t mention how long ago). They kept me in stitches then, and I’m sure they’ll do the same for the masses this holiday season.

So get out your gold, pass the popcorn and laugh your way through Thanksgiving this year! Four Christmases opens wide on November 25th.
