3 Jewelry Buying Tips For Men

Gentlemen, are you having trouble finding your special someone something she’ll absolutely love (Mother’s Day is right around the corner!)? We’re firm believers that jewelry always makes a great gift. Take a look at our three jewelry buying tips.

1) Ask For Help – If asking for help from one of her friends isn’t necessarily your cup of tea, then we have a better idea. Do some snooping (aka “gift researching”)! This is one time when snooping in her jewelry box is okay. Does she own a lot of rings or more necklaces? Does she like colorful gemstone jewelry or is classic black and white more her style?

2) Educate Yourself – If you noticed she has a lot of gold jewelry while “gift researching,” learn a little more about gold jewelry so you can make an educated decision when purchasing. Maybe you want to spice up her jewelry box with some white gold or rose gold. Read about the different types of gold in our blog post “Shades of Gold.”

3) Splurge A Little – Splurging a little on jewelry is totally okay (and we encourage it!). Jewelry is something she can wear forever, and there are some great styles that you can buy for under $100. Check out our $99 Jewelry Sale for some pretty pieces all $99 and under.

Shades of Gold

Let’s be honest, when it comes to both jewelry and clothing, gold will always be in style. Just take a look at the latest fall/winter 2015 runway trends during Mercedes Benz Fashion Week (MBFW) – gold had a presence! When it comes to gold, there are a number of different hues and types.

Yellow Gold – If you’re an easy-breezy, low-maintenance type of gal, then this is the gold for you. Yellow gold is the purest gold and requires the least amount of maintenance. For a brighter yellow color, look for 14K gold vs. 10K gold. For a deeper yellow color, look for 18K gold vs. 14K gold. Click here to shop for yellow gold.

White Gold – If you’re not into yellow gold, but still want something durable and of good quality, white gold is your best bet (and one of our favorites). It’s super stylish and differs from yellow gold only in its color. White gold contains a gold and nickel, palladium, or manganese alloy, that gives it that nice silver-type coloring. Rose Gold – If you’re a trendy fashionista (we know you are!), then throw on some rose gold. Rose Gold gets its beautiful pinkish color through a silver, gold, and copper alloy. Click here to shop for rose gold.

Green Gold – Dare to be different with green gold. When you think of gold, we bet green gold doesn’t usually come to mind, but it’s out there and it’s pretty! The green gold alloy is a combination of silver, copper, zinc, and yellow gold.

The Jewelry Insider

Our favorite film festival has arrived…the Cannes Film Festival, unless you prefer the full French name Le Festival International du Film de Cannes (say that three times fast in your best French accent!). Cannes is fun for a number of reasons. One, who doesn’t love movies? Two, it takes place in France. Three (and this is of course the most important), celebs come decked out in their very best jewelry!
Blake Lively really is a fashion goddess. After her gorgeous Met Gala look, she knocked it out of the park once again during the first day of Cannes. She accessorized her burgundy Gucci gown with a Lorraine Schwartz colored diamond flower bracelet, a diamond vine bracelet, and unique pink diamond earrings with 25 carat ruby drops. We just love the big-earrings look! Wonder if we could pull them off…

Do we even have to say anything about Nicole Kidman? This woman just oozes class. She paired an Armani Prive gown (embellished with tons of bling) with some gorgeous Harry Winston diamond earrings, a Harry Winston diamond bracelet, and a Winston Cluster Line bracelet. Loving the bracelets! Pretty in character for her new film Grace of Monaco where she plays Grace Kelly, don’t you think?

Earrings were a big trend at the opening day of Cannes. Although many critics didn’t agree with model Karlie Kloss’s dark Valentino gown, we really loved her jewels. Karlie completed her look with ethical pendant earrings from Chopard’s Green Carpet Collection.

Rose gold jewelry is very popular at the moment, and perfect for the upcoming warm-weather months. Zoe Saldana stunned in a white Victoria Beckham dress, paired with Catene rose gold and diamond earrings and an Onde ring. The rose gold creates a lovely contrast with her white dress.

O.M.G. We had to save the best for last. Here is Elena Lenina, the eccentric Russian star, in an extremely poufy red dress and just look at that hair! HOW did she get it to do that? We’re lucky if we get some curls to stay in throughout the day. Her hair is completely dolled up with a tiara, crown, some funky flower looking jewel-encrusted hair pieces, and honestly, we don’t even know what else she could be hiding in there. Any guesses?

Kristen Stewart’s Promise Ring Buzz

Did you hear? Twilight hunk Robert Pattinson gave co-star and sweetheart, Kristen Stewart, a ring last week! (And you thought the budget brouhaha in Washington was big news.)

While Twi-hards will be disappointed to learn that the rumored ring is not, in fact, an engagement ring – it is a rock that comes with relationship strings.

According to Hollwoodgossip.com, R-Pats threw down a whopping $17,000 for a vintage promise ring and is just “waiting for the right time to give it to her.”

A source said, “The ring is rose-cut diamonds set in rose gold. It’s a very feminine piece of jewelry and very old. The diamonds aren’t huge, and it doesn’t look like an engagement ring. [He] found it through a dealer who specializes in estate jewelry, and he knew it was just perfect for Kristen.”

He’s not proposing, though. But the snitch is convinced that he would, if Kristen were on board for it.

I haven’t heard much about the use of ‘promise rings’ these days, but it’s heart-warming to know the tradition continues even with A-listers like this Tween dream couple. It’s also nice to hear that rose gold is still a hot trend for all the metal mavens out there.

Rose Gold Ring with Diamonds

Rose gold, for the uninitiated, is a gold and copper alloy also known as pink gold or red gold (depending on the amount of copper in the mix).

Rose-cut diamonds were introduced as early as the 1500’s and were popular until the early 1900’s – so you see them a lot in vintage pieces like the one Rob apparently selected.

Everything’s certainly coming up roses for Kristen Stewart these days. I’ll be on the lookout for her rosy ring pics – so stay tuned!

In the meantime, do you guys see promise rings making a comeback out there? Is this a new trend or a sweet gesture from a bygone era?
