The USA women’s gymnastics team won the gold yesterday at the Rio Olympics, and they looked good doing it – wearing almost 5,000 Swarovski crystals each (bling, bling)! Designed by Under Armour, each gymnast’s 2016 leotard is patriotically designed in red, white, and blue, and embellished with shimmering Swarovski crystals. The estimated in-store retail price would cost around $1,200 per leotard!
Love shimmer and sparkle but without the $$$? Then crystals are the next best option to give you that icy-shine loaded with healing powers and endless styling options. So what is a crystal exactly? Generally speaking, this stone is a solid material made of atoms, molecules and ions which have been arranged in a highly complex mathematical pattern called a crystal lattice. This is just the beginning of this piecingly bright gem, find out more below…
1. Crystal comes from the word krustallos which deviates from kruos meaning icy, cold frost.
2. Examples of larger crystals include table salt, snowflakes and diamonds.
3. Almost all types of crystals have some kind of imperfection.
4. The Cave of Crystals located in Mexico, contains some of the largest natural crystals in the world. The largest one in 39 by 13 feet and 55 tons in weight.
5. Crystals have also been known to heal, often used in alternative medicine helping with everything from headaches to cancer.
The weather’s getting warmer, and you know what that means – it’s time to start planning for those warm-weather vacas! We don’t know about you, but for us, the hardest part of vacation (other than having to come home) is packing. We’ll admit that we’re slight over packers, but hey, we’re working on it, and over the years we’ve gathered a few great packing tips. Here are three travel jewelry essentials to pack for that upcoming vacation.
Jewelry Basics – Since you’ll most likely be traveling with a number of different outfit options, try to pack some basic jewelry pieces that will match with the majority of your outfits. For instance, bring along a pair of simple studs or a plain bangle. Depending on where you’re going, you might also want to consider packing less expensive pieces that you can easily replace if they’re lost or stolen. Take a look at our suggestions in the photo below, and shop for your own jewelry basics at Jewelry.com.
Statement Jewelry – Vacation is a special occasion, and statement jewelry is always perfect for a special occasion. Make sure to pack one or two fun pieces of statement jewelry, like some colorful earrings or that cocktail ring you haven’t taken out of the box. We have some great suggestions in the photo below that can be purchased at Jewelry.com.
Wedding Band & Engagement Ring Alternatives – If you’ve got a clunker of an engagement ring or an expensive wedding band, it might be a good idea to leave them at home, and wear an alternative ring while on vacation. Of course this depends on where you are traveling to, but it’s always smart to be extra cautious when traveling with your favorite jewelry pieces! Rock a gemstone or Swarovski ring, or a simpler band. Check out our suggestions in the photo below, and get your ring-alternatives at Jewelry.com.
Happy and safe travels!
As if being a top-notch Victoria’s Secret angel, having a husband named Orlando Bloom and an adorable son named Flynn isn’t enough happiness in your life, surely a little Swarovski sparkle will do the trick. Can’t we all be so lucky?
According to a press release, the creative director Ronnie Cooke Newhouse said, “Mix Miranda Kerr with home-grown English garden roses, Swarovski jewelery, Nick Knight photography, original Pharrell Williams music and you get beauty, warmth, coolness and desirability. Things we love.” We couldn’t agree more. The campaign was shot by British photographer Nick Knight.
Past faces of Swarovski include Candice Swanepoel, Lily Donaldson, Katie Fogarty and Berenice Marlohe.

Lively was joined by Chloe Sevigny, Lucy Liu, and Evan Rachel Wood as she unveiled the special editions necklaces for the launch of the store. All the proceeds go to benefit charity: water, a non-profit organization bringing clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations.
“The availability of clean water is such an important issue and it is wonderful to be involved in a project that is striving to make this basic resource available to all people throughout the world,” Lively said.
The Swarovski Concept Store will offer customizable jewelry for its customers, as well as collections from cutting edge designers.
So if you’re in New York City and want a cool, new item for your girls’ night ‘to do’ list or a groovy gift idea for your bridesmaids, head to the Swarovski store where you can sip iced lattes while they put the finishing touches on your customized jewelry piece.
A much better idea for bridesmaids’ gifts than a (snore) picture frame or a scented candle, right?
Tonight, a longtime holiday tradition continues in New York’s Rockefeller Center with the 76th annual tree lighting ceremony. While New Yorkers like myself know better than to brave the crowds in midtown until well into next year, tourists and tree-lovers alike flock to the landmark to take part in the festivities every year.
Jewelry hounds will be happy to note that the glittering star on top of the 8-ton, 72-foot Norway spruce is a miracle in and of itself. The Swarovski sparkler weighs in at a whopping 550 pounds, is over 9 feet tall and is made of 25,000 glittering crystals. What a way to ‘bling’ in the holiday season!
Tony Bennett, Harry Connick, Jr., Jamie Foxx and Beyonce are among the entertainers scheduled to perform, and Britney Spears is expected to officially ‘light’ the 30,000 energy-efficient LED bulbs that sit on over 5 miles of wire.
Other important guests include a Pascagoula, Mississippi family whose new home was built in part with lumber from last year’s Rockefeller Center Christmas tree, an 84-foot-tall Norway spruce.
Light for the holiday season, and light at the end of the tunnel. A wonderful sentiment and a glittering way to mark the official start of the holiday season.
NBC will air the entire ceremony tonight at 8pm.
Diamonds and jewels have been showing up in the strangest places lately. We thought we’d take your minds off the back-to-school blahs and the endless coverage of Sarah Palin’s children (and her children’s children) by sharing a few of our more bizarre discoveries.
Hitting the green now means you have to be IN the green. We’ve found a must-have accessory for every golfer worth their weight in gold: a diamond encrusted golf ball marker. Not satisfied with your basic plastic disc or, say, a stray leaf? Pick up Shano’s luxurious design for a mere $10,200. Caked with a half-carat of white VS diamonds on the platinum rim, this mighty little accoutrement measures one inch in diameter and is only 1/10 of an inch thick. Fore!
Not to be outdone, Swarovski designers always find something bizarre to bejewel. We thought their bathroom sink line was a stretch, but this latest news tops it. Your diamond and mink fake eyelashes now have the perfect partner: Swarovski studded contacts. Dubbed “Sparkle,” the lenses are embedded with a circle of tiny Swarovski crystals around the edges.
Indian designer, Anthony Mallier, created the look for a design competition organized by designboom and Swarovski called “Crystal Vision”. He took the theme literally and came up with second prize (out of 4,074 entries).
No word yet on who is brave enough to wear them. Maybe Ms. Palin will give them a go?
